Food in Auckland? Centrally located? For a casual lunch downtown, I recommend the cafe FooDoo (High Street and Victoria Street). Or you could go up to Ponsonby road for the cafes Cezanne (crunchy-hippie generous portions) or Bambina Bistro (tres chic, but the food's good). The cafe at Smith and Caughey is a Kiwi blast from the past, but the food's classically stodgy...

For a sophisticated dinner downtown, a place called O'Connell's Bistro looks really, really good, and has received very good reviews. For seafood downtown with the freshest stuff, at a decent price, without too many suits, Seamart is the place. I believe they also do lunch. A good Indian restaraunt is Moghul on Lorne Street (they do lunch too). You could also take the Link bus to Parnell and go to Non Solo Pizza (semiformal), or to Ponsonby and go to Sawadee Thai (very, very good indeed) or Pluson (especially good if you're with a crew who want to be loud and jolly in a fine-dining environment). The ne plus ultra of sophisticated Auckland dining is Vinnie's in Herne Bay, but this place will be very demanding upon your wallet. If you're adventurous and cheap, try some of the Asian places on upper Queen street, especially Nol Bu Ne, the Korean food place painted blue next to Real Groovy Records that looks like a dump but is actually very good indeed. I recently got food poisoning at the Albert Street Food Alley Asian food court, so don't go there!

Just outside the central city on Symonds Street (a long walk/short taxi ride) is Gina's Pizza and Pasta, which is a winner in my book, and moderately priced. I have to say this isn't very Kiwi, being tasty and authentic Italian.

You'll notice I don't recommend anything in the America's Cup basin area. This is because, well, all the tourists go there, and the food's overpriced and not the greatest! Go there for a walk, though. If you absolutely must eat food while looking at boats, go to the Westhaven Marina and eat at the Sitting Duck cafe there - it's okay, not a destination food place, but the scene can't be beat. You'll need a car to get there, though.
