Among those who read The Observer today was me Simon's old (increasingly old, as it happens) tutor from King's College. Naturally I expect to be taken to a restaurant on his tab. Have girth, will travel.

Hello Terry

Much respect to the man who taught me that God was in the details ( if I remember rightly, in the details like the c- you used to give my essays. I remember once you said that the essay on the proofs of the existence of god looked like I had written it the night before without reading any of the appropriate texts and while fuelled by something other than ovaltine. I could only compliment you on your perception )

That being said, I am very glad that it is Jay Rayner who respected me, not AA Gill then I really would have had to kill myself. Perhaps by inhaling near MPW.

Dear Mr Majumdar

Not being much of a restaurant man myself (my favourite eatery would probably be the Golden Egg - RIP) could you give me some recommendations for good places to eat in London where I won't make a show of myself.

Thanks very much

Never knock The Golden Egg. Many a wild childish adventure ( i.e a visit to Rotherham Market ) was finished off by a Pirates Platter at said eatery. As I recall it involved, chips, beans, an egg fried in a mold so it was about 1/2 in high and the star of the plate, a large sausage which was cut at regular intervals along its length and curled arond the edge of the plate.

Of such beginnings are chowhounds made

Wouldn't dream of knocking the Golden Egg. I still dream of the Banana Longboat - a culinary tour de force. Are you a professional Yorkshireman by any chance, you certainly sound like one?

Cheers

In the interests of accuracy and keeping my brother's head at a manageable size I should point out that I am the man behind the man that Mr Rayner refers to. Simon is but a mouthpiece for our culinary adventures because he writes a lot better than what I do.

PS Simon, thanks for the Seabass & Chips on Sunday
