We just got back from a 3 week trip to Italy. The first week we stayed at the San Domenico hotel in Taormina which was lovely and a short walk to the center of town and to all the restaurants we tried. Da Lorenzo is right next door to the hotel. We had a marvelous dinner there; fresh anchovies, spaghetti bottarga, perfect grilled fish (swordfish, sea bass which is called spigola in the south and branzino in the north)and grouper (cernia). Fragolini di bosco was one of the desserts (little wild strawberries served with either orange or lemon juice. They offered an apperitif when we sat down, and we followed that with two bottles of a delicious local white wine. After dinner they gave us ice cold limoncello. There were four of us and our share for two was about $65. Another wonderful place is called Dracena. We ate lunch there twice. Al Duomo is in the same category as Da Lorenzo and Dracena and is equally wonderful. A little more expensive and fancy was La Giarga, right in the middle of town. Maffei's was absolutely fabulous but the bill was about $250 for two of us. We had a tasting menu there; Just about every fish in the Meditteranean plus their specialty, a black raviolli. Great canolli also. A couple of the restaurants had a pianist and they played the Godfather theme everywhere.
