Will be spending ten days in Oaxaca and Puerto Escondido at the end of October. I know there is incredible food there, and I know about the grasshoppers and iguanas (which I must try) but does anyone have any specific place recommendations or tips? A chowhound search turned up nothing. Thanks in advance.
Zaslavsky: "A Cooks Tour of Mexico".
Martinez: "The Food and Life of Oaxaca".
Zaslavsky recommends the following restaurants in Oaxaca: El Bice Pobre, La Olla, Flor de Oaxaca, El Meson, Yu Ne Nisa and Tlamanalli.
I have just returned from a week in Michoacan, Mexico. The food from the street stands was better than that in the restaurants (no, I didn't get sick).
If you speak even limited Spanish, you can take the buses from Oaxaca to surrounding villages. Do so on market days. It helps to go into the bus station with the name of your destination written down if your pronounciation is as bad as mine (the names are often Mixtec or Zapotec and thus tougher than Spanish to pronounce).
In Oaxaca look for the moles (meats in sauces of chilis, bread crumbs and a dozen other things) and unusual drinks (from chocolates, to corn gruels to mezcal). For some guidance look at the Los Angeles board's discussions of a restaurant named "Gueleguetza" which is authentically Oaxacan.
