First, if you've never been to Guatemala...GO. (More
below.) Second, once there eat at Kakao in Guatemala
City. Outstanding food and service with multiple
regional dishes. Local rum tops things off. I just
celebrated a wedding anniversary at this place and was
thrilled to take my wife somewhere I'd checked out
before.

Once in the country go to Antigua and eat at Posada de
Don Rodrigo. Enjoy the splendid garden, great local
food, and marimba music from noon until about 5:00. My
friend in Antigua tells me most of the staff are
children and grandchildren of the Don himself. An
acquaintance in the country who's studied tourism
warns me that this charming Inn may be about to become
a Courtyard by Marriott (so hurry).

Then go to Lake Atitlán (about a three hour trip from
Guatemala City -- do not drive late at night). Eat
at Hotel Atitán. This is on the lake that Aldous
Huxley called the most beautiful in the world. Kitz
agrees as this is only rivaled by some lakes I've been
on in Switzerland.

I've only been to about 20 countries and always seek
great food but these are strong recommendations for a
fun trip and great food!
