Arriving in Maui this Saturday. From previous posts we
plan on dinner at Mama's Fish House, Sansei in Kapula
and A Pacific Cafe Honokowai. Need rec's for other
restaurants in the moderate price range.
We are staying in the Kaanapali area.
We just ate at The Waterfront two nights ago (based on recommendations from this board), and I just want to note that it is definitely an old-school type of place: Caesar salad prepared tableside, desserts presented on a tray, and set accompaniments of rice pilaf and vegetables on the side.
The setting is lovely, and our fish was fresh and delicious, but The Waterfront seemed very touristy to us. We'd eaten with friends at the Hali'imaile General Store the night before (which probably attracts just as many tourists) and it seemed much more personal, somehow the chef's personality and attention came through more clearly at HGS compared to the more formulaic Waterfront.
Anyway, both are good, but I wished previous reports on The Waterfront had been more specific about the food.
The wife & I just got back from Maui & I have to agree wholeheartedly with Millicent on Hali'imaile General Store. We went there for our anniversay and it was great. The food was excellent, Pacific rim cuisine made with locally grown products, the service was friendly & not overwhelming. It struck me as a more local place and was much less hectic than the tourist places on the west & south coasts of the island. We liked it so much we went back for our last dinner on Maui.
Guarantee you will dine at Sansei more than once to try different items on menu---remember it is NOT about the sushi, but rather the "specials" indicated by their butterfly or octopus logo. Shrimp/prawns in aioli like sauce a MUST!
