Favorite Local Snack?

What are some of your favorite snacks from Hawaii? Currently, I can't stop eating these dried mango strips with Li Hing Mui powder...

Ha, now you talking! But the best dried squid was the one which was sun dried (optopus) and puleho'd over the fire. Not real dry but a little moist in the middle. Now that we're talking about stinky stuff, dried abalone has to be at the top of the list. But who can afford it anymore?

Dried abalone! The kind you carried in your front jeans pocket and carved slices with a pocket knife to eat? Now that brings back some old time memories.

Kaki mochi! My favorite brand was the old Yick Lung product with lots of shoyu in it. The ones they have at Wholesale Unlimited are OK but not the same. Long's and Walmart have some good brands as well as Don Quixote. The ones from Lin's Market sold at the Aloha swap meet are so-so.

Oh man, you must be old as Adam? Haven't had ice cake in waxed paper cups with a wooden spoon in decades. Almost as good as having a tall shave ice served in paper cones on a hot tropical day.

Besides just the ridiculously fresh and yummy pineapple...

I'd say this roasted coconut treat we got in Hana, Maui. It was from this little roadside stand...Uncle Willie roasted it up right there. It was AMAZING!

Ed & Don's toasted coconut chips are great - you get them in a vacumn can - wonderful to munch on. I've had them shipped to the mainland, but can't remember the name of the website - think I posted it a long while back. I know not authentic or old-style, but I love honey roasted macadamia nuts - can get them off the Mauna Loa website.

I love dry lemon peel and lime balls - the lime balls are harder to find. I also love regular Li Hing Mui. I have to really stock up when I go back to the islands. A great place for cracked seed is the "Cracked Seed" shop in Waimea (Big Island).

Justine: I've never tried lime balls--thanks for the tip. I also didn't know that there was a crackseed store in Waimea.

It's in a little old strip mallish place on the way out of town towards Hawaii Prep and Hapuna. It's on the right hand side across the street from a music store and a quilting shop (sorry I'm not being more specific). There is a little convenience store in the same strip mall.

The woman who runs it is really really nice and she will ship to the mainland - her number is 808-885-6966.

Last time I was there she didn't have lime ball but I'm sure she could track some down. I love dry lemon peel and have been eating it since I was way little - but the first time I had lime ball I was hooked - very ono.

Lime balls?? been away on the mainland for too long I guess. What are they like, and can you find them in Honolulu, maybe Farmer's Market (if it's still there) or the crack seed place in Ala Moana Center? I usually stock up on rock salt plum and mango li hing mui.

I think lime balls are relatively new - I don't remember them from when I was a kid but my mom brought some back a couple of years ago and I fell in love. Below is a link to check them out.
