I work near City Hall in Manhattan and I'm looking for good lunch places as far north as Chambers Street (roughly) and as far south as the Staten Island Ferry. I would prefer cheap places where my co-workers and I can go for a casual, cheap meal that won't take too long. I don't mean places for business lunches. We're a gregarious group that loves to eat but our challenge to each other is to try to find places where each person spends no more than $10, although we're willing to compromise for the best tacos, falafel, Cuban sandwiches, pho, or whatever other "best" is out there. Let's hear your suggestions!

Try Tandoori Kitchen on Fulton opposite Strand Books for delicious Indian food in a grungy environment. They make a wonderful Samosa Chat for about $3.50.

There's a nice Korean place on Williams between Nassau and B'way.

There used to be a nice Cuban/Dominican place on Fulton near Tandoori kitchen, but it may be closed. They made a great Bacalao stew every Friday.

Chow down!

I'd go for Sophies on Pearl St (I know there are 2 others but I forgot where they are) for great Cuban food. Five bucks for the grilled chicken sandwich.

Burritoville on Water Street or Nassau is good for a cheap eat.

Anything is good at Zaytuna, the sandwiches at Lenny's on John Street are always good, and the Lamb and Rice platter (ask for chickpeas!) from the guys with the Halal truck on the corner of Pearl and Wall is great for $5 (including soda!).

But probably the best deal is the falafel truck on William near Liberty -- a full platter of salad, falafel, pita bread, hummus, babaganouch and stuffed grape leaves for THREE-FIFTY. Wow.

Also try the Pakistan Tea House on Church. You'll see plenty of posts about it on this site. Their naan is the prized attraction--made to order, perfectly charred, and with a light balance of sweetness and smokiness. The rest of the food is already prepared, and they just reheat it for you, but it still surprisingly good.
