Best knishes? Any borough, but prefer Manhattan.

There used to be the most amazing knishes at this little Jewish deli in Miami, but they went out of business and I haven't had a good one since. I know New York has their fair share of delis... any knishes that must be tried?

I don't think I'd ever travel too far to get a knish, but when I'm in NYC, I don't have to look very far....walk out of GCT and find a Sabrett cart. Ask for a knish with mustard. As good as I've ever had!

Since you prefer Manhattan, you'll probably end up going to Yonah Schimmel's. Good retro-ambience. Don't let them heat up a knish in the microwave. Get it right out of the oven. If you go there, I suggest getting one sweet potato knish and one spinach knish. On the latter, I suggest putting generous amounts of mustard, as their mustard tastes just like it's supposed to.

Given that it specializes in knishes, Yonah Schimmel's is EXTREMELY disappointing. The knishes have very doughy exteriors and bland fillings - the potato knish takes like boxed dried mashed potatoes. (I've tried it multiple times hoping, for some reason, that I'm wrong. Skip the knish and go to Katz' down the street for deli or bereket for kebabs.)

Jerusalem pizza II on Avenue J in Brooklyn ( Midwood area). They say these are the same recipe as Ruby the knishman's famous knishes. They taste deeeeelicious. Give em a try !

Mrs. Stahl's in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn. Corner of Brighton and Coney Island Ave. Just a block from the beach and boardwalk.

I went to Brighton Beach this week and, to my sadness, discovered that Mrs. Stahl's knishes are no longer sold at the corner of Coney Island Ave. and Brighton, as they had been for many, many years. On the bright side, that neighborhood, and Coney Island Ave.'s entire length are great for Russian, Turkish, Mexican and Bangali food. ENJOY!

There used to be a great place in Long Beach on the boardwalk called Royal Knishes. I do not know if they are still there,

Zabar's. The best knishes in NYC. Much better then Schimmel's. Try their apple strudel as well, same counter.

I got your spots for the BEST New Yawk City knishes. They are:

Knish Nosh: 4th Ave between 13th & 14th Street on the east side of the street. Potatoe, Kasha and Spinach

Yona Schimels: East Houston St. close to Attorney St. (Probably the BEST)

You could also find decent knishes at:

                  2nd Ave Deli: (2nd Ave @ 11th Street)

Carnegie Deli: (7th Ave between 54th-55th Street)

                  Hope that helps!

                  Enjoy!

All of the big three knish places have gone way down, Yonah Shimmel on Houston, Stahls on Coney Island Ave and Knish Nosh on Queens Blvd.

Agree. Katz's serves a decent knish, but not great. No great knishes in NYC anymore.

You wanna great knish? Ashkenaz Deli in Chicago.

The ashkenaz deli in Chicago closed. Trust me NYC has better knishes then Chicago, not many places have knishes here. Don't they have knishes on street carts in NYC?

The knishes at Ashkenaz blew anything in NYC out of the water. There are no really great knishes in NYC anymore.

Ashkenaz website up and running just fine...

No we don't have knish street carts.

If you're not from NYC, how can you say with such certainty that there are better knishes here? Where are these better knishes?

I think he meant knishes being sold on street carts not street carts that exclusively sold knishes. Most hot dog carts sell knishes. Most sell really horrible dried up knishes though :(

Yonah Schimmel Knish Bakery, 137 E. Houston Street (pronounced HOUSE-ton), New York City, makes the biggest, freshest, tastiest, most nourishing knishes I've ever had: mushroom, spinich, potato, and kasha. One kasha knish equals one lunch! Two blocks east, at 205 E Houston, is Katz's Deli. Katz's has the best pastrami sandwiches in NYC. Katz's knishes are good, but they do not compare with Yonah Schimmel's. I'm hunting for good knishes in Chicago. Does anyone have some firm leads?

Daphil Deli in Albertson, Long Island. Hell, I even think that Carnegie Deli serves a pretty good knish (i happen to like Kasha knishes), but it's been a few years.

Sorry....I know these posts are really kind of old but just saw this one re knishes and can tell you that it is illegal in NYC to sell knishes from street carts as they cannot be heated to a correct temperature to ensure that they will be safe to eat. health department rules. too bad since i have eaten many street cart knishes in my life and never got sick from any of them.

Knish Nosh on Queens Blvd. is, alas, long gone, but I think it has reopened somewhere else.

I agree, even though there are those that say they are not as good as they used to be. They are still better than most.

Try the new cabbage knish. It's savory, a little sweet, and wonderfully dense and filling. Great comfort food.
