Best knishes? Any borough, but prefer Manhattan.
There used to be the most amazing knishes at this little Jewish deli in Miami, but they went out of business and I haven't had a good one since. I know New York has their fair share of delis... any knishes that must be tried?

Since you prefer Manhattan, you'll probably end up going to Yonah Schimmel's. Good retro-ambience. Don't let them heat up a knish in the microwave. Get it right out of the oven. If you go there, I suggest getting one sweet potato knish and one spinach knish. On the latter, I suggest putting generous amounts of mustard, as their mustard tastes just like it's supposed to.

re: Benj
Given that it specializes in knishes, Yonah Schimmel's is EXTREMELY disappointing. The knishes have very doughy exteriors and bland fillings - the potato knish takes like boxed dried mashed potatoes. (I've tried it multiple times hoping, for some reason, that I'm wrong. Skip the knish and go to Katz' down the street for deli or bereket for kebabs.)

Mrs. Stahl's in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn. Corner of Brighton and Coney Island Ave. Just a block from the beach and boardwalk.

re: Adam Holland
I went to Brighton Beach this week and, to my sadness, discovered that Mrs. Stahl's knishes are no longer sold at the corner of Coney Island Ave. and Brighton, as they had been for many, many years. On the bright side, that neighborhood, and Coney Island Ave.'s entire length are great for Russian, Turkish, Mexican and Bangali food. ENJOY!

re: clarifier
Yonah Schimmel Knish Bakery, 137 E. Houston Street (pronounced HOUSE-ton), New York City, makes the biggest, freshest, tastiest, most nourishing knishes I've ever had: mushroom, spinich, potato, and kasha. One kasha knish equals one lunch! Two blocks east, at 205 E Houston, is Katz's Deli. Katz's has the best pastrami sandwiches in NYC. Katz's knishes are good, but they do not compare with Yonah Schimmel's. I'm hunting for good knishes in Chicago. Does anyone have some firm leads?

re: brian schwartz
Sorry....I know these posts are really kind of old but just saw this one re knishes and can tell you that it is illegal in NYC to sell knishes from street carts as they cannot be heated to a correct temperature to ensure that they will be safe to eat. health department rules. too bad since i have eaten many street cart knishes in my life and never got sick from any of them.
