I need suggestions for where to find a delicious, attractive, artful wedding cake. Something a bit unusual, not the straight, classic, tiered white cake. And not the Cupcake Cafe--their cakes are pretty, but my fiance and I don't like the way they taste.

They are interesting and quite good. I agree with you about cupcake cafe - pretty, just not very tasty.

Black Hound was the first place I thought of, but they don't make wedding cakes per se. I suppose I could stack several of their nonwedding cakes. I'd rather find someone who'll do the whole thing, though.

They used to and they were really unusual. Maybe they would honor a specific request? I'll get back to you on an alternate idea....

I stopped by Blackhound and they said that while they won't do layers, they make most of their cakes as big as 18" round and say it feeds 95-105 people. That's the biggest one available, I know city bakery doesn't do cakes of any kind but I'm still trying to get the name of this guy who works for himself and does these really beautiful custom cakes. I will let you know when I do. Don't know if the Blackhound info fits the bill at all.....

Although I don't want the standard white job with flowers, I do want the thing to bear some family resemblance to a wedding cake, so a flat, round cake won't quite do it. I know there's got to be a cake out there that's delicious, like Black Hound's, but also gorgeous and hilarious, with layers and artistry in the icing. Thanks for your help!

I had my cake done at

Chelsea Baking Co. Inc. 259 W. 19th, NYC, (212)-242-7692

They do anything you want from the tackiest stuff to the most conservative. I didn't have much confidence after meeting them but they did a stellar job and the cake was affordable and as delicious as it was beautiful.

Enjoy.

I had my cake made by a man named Ron Ben-Israel. It was amazingly beautiful and absolutely delicious. He is the nicest guy ever and he is really creative and will work with you to make the exact type of cake you want. The only negative is that he is pretty expensive. I know he has a website with all of his info, so if you go to Yahoo and do a search on him you will fin it. Good luck.

There are bound to be other threads on this, but the (made fresh) wedding cakes from CC are much better than the cakes and cupcakes they keep in their display cabinet until the frosting fossilizes. Still, they don't keep well for that first anniversary, and even at its best, the flavor has a homespun element (appreciated primarily by the 'superior palate' and five-year olds...) ;)
