Guss's pickles. You can also get good middle eastern pickles upstairs at the counter at Kalustyan's- pickled eggplant, cucumber, etc. Also a good selection on Atlantic Ave. in Brooklyn. By the way, if anyone knows where to get good japanese pickles, sans MSG, please reply!!

    1. Guss Pickles on Essex Street on the Lower East Side. It's probably one of the only -- if not the only -- place in Manhattan which makes them on the premises, both half sour ("new pickle") and sour.

      1. There's a guy selling great pickles from a stand at the west 4th street subway stop.

        1. guss's on essex.

i just bought some brilliant horseradish pickles from the pickle place on 1st ave and 86th street

          1. Try the red flannel and the honey mustard pickle chips at hormans 6th ave and carmine st.
            Not traditional but damn good.

The best in my opinion are BaTampte half sour. They might be the ones served at Guss and/or the Pickle Guys.

Fairway-the pickles stack up to anyones

            2. Pickles and Olives on the UES. I live in the village and travel up there to get them. I like the half sour while DH prefers the sour dill.

              1. Brooklyn Brine Co. makes the best damned pickles I've ever eaten.

                1. Is there a more New York institution than Gus's pickles? I have great memories of going to Gus's, picking out bright green super crunchy half-sour pickles, regular sour pickles, and sometimes - depending on my dad's mood - pickled peppers, too.
