In today's NY Times Dining Out section, there's an article called "Lowly short ribs: taste to make a sirloin bow." All the dishes/recipes sound terrific.

What restaurant makes the best short ribs?

Had some outrageous short ribs last May at Rauxa, the Catalan restaurant in Boston (Somerville, actually, I think.) I'm not sure if they're on the menu year-round. Definitely worth a detour when they are.

These led to a highly successful attempt at home - improvised on NY Times Cookbook recipe for braised oxtails. Made them in anticipation of the promised "big storm" the other week. At least the ribs didn't fizzle out!

I had absolutely superb short ribs at Blue Hill. (The sirloin that came with it wasn't nearly as good.) The ribs were part of a tasting menu and the one rib was so rich my companion and I together could barely finish it (but it was so good that we prevailed)

In Wed. N.Y. Times the short ribs article included recipes from restaurants. When I had them at the USC I was in the mood for comfort food. Daniel had it listed surprisingly as a signature dish.

I just made this recipe on Friday night (after salivating through the Wednesday NYT article.)I was afraid that it wouldn't work since the meat tends to be so soft after braising that it couldn't hold it's own on subsequent grilling. But work it did - absolutely delicious! It's hard to go too far wrong cooking short ribs.
