A friend mentioned that she's been having gazpacho cravings lately. I thought for sure I'd be able to find a few recommendations here, but a quick search of the site only turned up two interesting recipes for gazpacho, a lament from the big hound that gazpacho never tastes as good in the U.S. as it does in Spain, and a few passing references, mostly to "gazpacho-like" sauces.

Any nominations for the best gazpacho in NYC? How about the best in Manhattan? (Extra points for any place on the UES.)

This was over a year ago, but I had an incredibly tasty but not-at-all-authentic-Spanish gazpacho at Indigo in the West Village. That was probably the best restaurant gazpacho I've had. The best overall was one I made myself from a Mario Batali recipe on the Food Network site. (It was fron the Mediterranean Mario show, and most likely not online anymore.) If you can track it down, I recommend it highly. I'm not sure where my copy is, but I remember it had an insane amount of olive oil.

Try Word of Mouth, west side of Lexington Ave. between 72 n 73rd.

A takeout food shop of high quality and still higher prices. BUT the gazpacho, when available, is equal to the best in Seville or Marbella. And less costly than a plane ticket there and back

Call ahead as they have a schedule of when it will be available.

I had excellent gazpacho last night at the Banania Cafe in Brooklyn (Smith St. @ Douglass). It's authenticity is questionable, but it was damn delicious - incredibly fresh tomato flavor, bits of avocado, cucumber ribbons, and a drizzle of oil. Perfect temperature, too.
