There is a world of difference between yeast-raised doughnuts and cake doughnuts. To me the only thing they have in common is the shape. There is this guy who makes them every morning (yeast-raised) and gets on his bike and delivers some to about a half-dozen outlets, one of which is Dean &Deluca on Broadway. I'm not sure what they are called, something like The Donut Plant. Anyway, IMHO they are the best yeast-raised ones around ( the variety of flavors is great also). Krispy Kremes though enticing, literally make me sick when I succumb to eating them.

They are sometimes kept in a Tupperware container and not on full veiw. Just ask for "those incredible doughnuts that guy on the bike brings around" and you'll get them.

You are right about the doughnuts from the Doughnut Plant (or whatever the name is) but I haven't seen them recently. Eureka Joe's at 5th and 22nd used to receive some. I read several reports that the doughnut person/owner was finally going to increase the size of his operation. Then I heard that he had gone to some other country (I think Mexico) and became interested in fried dough creations. Does anyone know what is going on?

I guess it depends on your taste. I find KKs to be tasteless, and way too sweet. IMHO, you could send a sponge through a KK machine, and create the same product. I expect that a great donut will generate complex flavors on the tongue. Any frosting, sugar glaze should enhance this flavor. KK's glaze totally overwhelms any other taste.

I'd like to find a donut made from fresh ingredients (not donut mix), and fresh fruit jelly (not commercial paste). Oh yes, and they should be fried in lard, not that vegetable junk.

A sponge, hot out of the grease, is still a sponge.

Krispie Kreme sucks. Totally. The donuts are too sweet and too small. The best jelly donut in town, bar none, is at a donut shop on First Avenue and 23rd St. I'm not sure what the filling is, but it's dark and tangy, not the flourescent ersatz strawberry jam found in most donuts. Marble crullers are also slammin'. If you like a crustier style try Gertel's, Hester and Essex, which also makes a great 7-layer cake and babka.

The BEST doughnuts in town are hand made by an eccentric baker in Soho. I forget his name, but he only makes a few hundred a day. They are unreal! And can be found at Dean & Deluca (not cheap), Prince and Broadway. They have to try these!

Ben,

Several varieties of Donut Plants are available every day at Zabar's. I don't know if something is lost in the hours after baking, but I haven't been impressed with them at all. The flavored ones clearly are made from superior ingredients than most, but my complaint is with the dough itself -- kind of soggy, greasy, and somehow airy and heavy at the same time.

Doughnut Plant is my recommendation. Huge, not too sweet, not too greasy, flavorful, etc. The fruit doughnuts are superb. Lower East Side...
