The best roast chicken? If we're talking in the world,
and not just NYC, then the winner hands-down is Chalet
BBQ at Sherbrooke and Girouard in Montreal.
A hole-in-the-wall, sure, but the food! And
cheap!
Spit-roasted chicken has been a Quebecois speciality
since the 40s, served with fries and sauce (none of
that silly Boston Market pasta salad and corn on the
cob...)
Other restaurants that bear visiting: Laurier BBQ, St.
Hunerts (chain). -
A little restaurant called Brunetta's on First Avenue between 10th and 11th(?) prepares excellent roasted chicken. It is simple, cheap and tasty.
I agree with you that Home's version is top-notch.›2 Replies-

How about the roast chicken at Gabriela's, the mexican
place at Amsterdam & 93rd? It's rubbed with garlic,
orange, and annatto (I think), and usually very juicy
and tasty. And cheap!!! $10 for a whole one with two
sides and fresh tortillas. For an extra dollar you can
get a sauce -- perhaps superfluous, but I like the
pipian (here, peanut and chile) anyway.
Maybe not the best, but quite good for the price.
