We have eaten at the college's hotel in Saranac Lake and are looking for other places that have fine dining within a 1/2 hours drive of the college. If you're seeking fine dining, try the Wawbeek on Route 30 in Upper Saranac. Excellent. In the village of Saranac Lake itself there is Corvo, across from the Hotel Saranac. Italian, not fancy but not as casual and red-saucy as The Belvedere. They do have a nice wine list and seem to be a little adventurous with some menu items. For the local, hometown favorite spot, you can't beat the Belvedere. For a greater choice, head to Lake Placid. One of my favorites is Nicola's, which specializes in Mediterranean cuisine. You can also try The Mirror Lake Inn or The Interlaken Inn. Not really "fine dining" but I have to throw in a plug for my absolute favorite place in Placid... VERY casual atmosphere but awesome creative and flavorful food... The Caribbean Cowboy!! You'd swear you walked into a hippie's basement but the food is (IMO) amazing- combinations of flavors you'd never think would work, but they truly do.
