I have been wanting to go to Tayste ever since reading this thread. I finally went today and it is CLOSED... and by closed, I mean, it's no longer open. There was a sign that said it was under new management and a diff restaurant is opening there. I was so disappointed! And espcially since Westchester magazine just named their Philly cheesesteak as one of the best sandwiches in the county.....

re: dolores
Dolores, unfortunately it closed long before Trump opened. It was a beautiful communal table, too, gorgeous in-laid tile. The owners just couldn't make a go of it.
We still have visions of their paella and moo shu wraps, they even had wraps for kids. Alas, it was replaced by yet another pub.

Hey, I wrote a "downhill alert" on Tayste back in October! Seems like the bloom is off the rose, and it's a shame.
We are still mourning the loss of Wrapsody-- remember the wrap place across the street with the communal table??

re: Dim Sum Diva
I've only been living in Westchester a little over a year now so I don't know Wrapsody but I have to say, I mourn the loss of any quality restaurant, especially casual ones, in Westchester. Definitely need more. I must give them credit for the name though - I generally don't like the cutesy play on words names for restaurants and other shops (haircutters, etc.) but Wrapsody works for me somehow. Sorry I won't get to try it.
If you like good wraps though, there's a small place in Larchmont called Wraps n Things that has some good ones just don't ever order the gazpacho there.

I just want to say thank you so much for remembering my restaurant. in fact I still own that communal table and also do catering from time to time. My wife and I still Mourn the loss of Wrappsody and if you like I could share with you what really happened and why we closed. Thanks again for the wonderful memories.

Tried to try Tayste today for lunch - eat in. It's Saturday and it was about 1:30 or so. I wouldn't call it crowded but it was full enough. We were next in line to place our order and then first in line. Our presence was acknowledged and we were told they'd be "right with us". A line began forming behind us. For the next 20 minutes nothing happened except that we watched order after order that although they looked good, were sent back because they were wrong. There were only four people working - Total - this includes waitstaff, cooks, cashier/order taker, etc. and one woman (the cashier/order taker/waitress) seemed to be trying to handle way too much. A gentleman, older, seemed to be cook and waiter and then there was one woman on the fry station and a younger guy doing random tasks. The workers were arguing behind the counter about who had messed up the orders and no one seemed to be in charge. We finally decided to leave and headed over to Latin American Cafe instead.
We'll try to try Tayste again but whether the food is good or not won't matter if they can't get their act together - and quick.

Well, it is unfortunate, but I have to post a DOWNHILL ALERT on Tayste.
We were there on a Saturday afternoon and the place was completely empty. It took us (four of us) no less than 1/2 hour to get our food. After placing our order, the waitress came back at least 4 times for clarification ("Do you want fries with that?") and a lot of that was repeating things we told her when placing the order. It was excrutiating.
The buns that I loved before were gone, replaced by unremarkable kaiser rolls, they just overpower the burgers. The meat in the burgers was good, but had that burnt "greasy grill" taste, I came home and brushed my teeth extra hard to get the flavor out of my mouth.
After waiting all that time for our food (and having to add extra $$ to the parking meter), the owner who was there when we walked in but disappeared until after our food hit the table, walked over and asked if everything was okay. I told him that we waited a lonnnnggggg time to get served. He said, "Yeah, but is everything okay?" Selective hearing, I guess.
Unlikely we will return.

re: Dim Sum Diva
We just got an assortment of stuff for lunch from Tayste (got it to go) and was all spectatular. The Philly cheesesteak was as good as I've had in Philly (it would have beat Steve's if it was bigger), regular or sweet potato fries were tasty and not greasy. Sliders with cheese, and a chili dog also were really well put together, especially the chili.
The only complaint is that the fries don't travel well (they were a bit limp after the 15 minute trip back to the office) and they only have soda from the fountain (which also doesn't travel well), but definitely a two thumbs up.
It didn't look sloppy behind the counter, and they were relatively busy with phone orders. One guy who was having lunch at the counter seemed kind of grumpy because the boss guy kept trying to chat with him to see how lunch was, but the fact that the guy devoured everything probably isn't a bad sign either.
We'll see how they are on a weekend, but this is a new favorite for weekday lunch that's cheap and tasty.

Yes!
Tayste is great! It used to be "Diggity Dogs" - it's the same owner - he just classed up the joint. They've got great grilled 100 percent beef Boar's Head hot dogs with lots of toppings and tons of crazy condiments. They peel their own fries (regular and sweet potato) right there. That's all I've tried so far, but I can't imagine ordering anything else.
My boyfriend and I both got dogs, split a BIG order of fries, two sodas and the check was like $9.00.
The owner and staff are super-friendly.›4 Replies-
re: HungryForMore
are we talking about the same place?
we read about it in the journal news and we were excited to try it. we went there saturday night at around 6pm. we were the only people there. we did not like the hot dogs. our sweet potato fries seemed to be the little leftover bits from the end of the day. they brought over the snapple bottles without giving us cups of ice with it. the burgers were okay.
also, you could see behind the counter where they cook from where the tables are. that being said, they should have kept the area much cleaner. it did not look clean at all, and i kept staring at it the whole time.
they also had no high chairs, which was surprising.
all in all, a very different experience.....-
re: tarrytown hound
No high chairs? Really? They've got high chairs all around the counter.
That's weird. Maybe it's one of those night-by-night places. I like to go in there on Mondays after my dance lesson. It's quiet (but not tooooo quiet), very clean, and.... you really didn't like the hot dogs and fries?
I'm surprised. I like seeing their work area because whenever I've been there, it looks really clean. But your experience does sound pretty bad. Maybe I'll stick to weeknights.
Now I've got a craving for sweet potato fries.-
re: HungryForMore
I went on a Saturday afternoon and the place was pretty crowded. I can see why you may think the kitchen was sloppy, orders were coming in and they were banging them out, focusing more on speed than neatness. Anyway, the burgers were good (not frozen patties like the ones at Brooklyn Diner around the corner) and the buns were quality (not the usual white bread flavorless stuff), someone in my party had a fruit salad that looked great. They have a nice variety of soft drinks beyond your basic Coke & Sprite (how about a Fizzy Lizzy?).
They also have a wide variety (they claim 50+) of ketchups and mustards on all the tables and counters. I had some roasted garlic/peppercorn variety. I noticed there were specials, such as chili and wings. They also have a sandwich menu. I will go back, my burger was under $4 and probably the best quality burger for that area of Mamaroneck Ave.
