you've actually got quite a few choices.

Telluride is a fav of folks on this Board. Very good and in the price range you are speaking of.

For Italian, Columbus Park Trattoria is another that is close by.
http://www.columbusparktrattoria.com/index2.htm

I also like Egane. It's on Bedford and is a pretty good upscale Korean. Considering we are in the suburbs, its very good. Moderate prices. 135 Bedford St

For Indian, there's Dakshin, across the street from the Marriott at the corner of Summer Street and Broad. It's very good suburb Indian. 68 Broad St

Another Italian place I really like is Siena. It's on Summer street only a block from your hotel. Serves Northern Italian dishes, which I like in the cold weather. 519 Summer St.

If you decide you want a very casual, low-key, late night meal, you are right next to the Stamford Brewery Company, which is best for... very casual, low-key, late night meals. It's what you'd expect at a brewery - burgers, etc. One of my frequent places to indulge in plain-ole, good comfort foods. They do those foods pretty well.

But back to your request for more moderate to expensive... another poster recently mentioned that they like Mona Lisa - also on Atlantic, but South a few blocks. Never been, so can't say for myself.

There are also some newer places nearby Columbus Park Tratorria - in that Bank Street park area. Anyone have experience with them?

Anyhow, lots of really decent places.

Please report back what you find.

Ocean 211 on the Summer Street extension is pricey but very good. Mona Lisa on Atlantic Street has excellent homemade Italian food. Their wine list is well thought out.

that's right. forgot about ocean 211. It's right around the corner - literally - from the Marriott. Have you been there recently? It's been a good 3+ years since I've been. When I went, I had - I think - sea bass which was great. I remember that their non fish meals were just so-so. But, again, it's been a long time...

Sorry for the delay in posting. I went back today after a long absence. Bottom line: I sat at the bar and had the best oysters (blue points) ever. Followed that up with a huge plate of steamed mussels in a wine reduction. Both the mussels and oysters were remarkable. The bread was so-so. The mussels were $14 and the expertly shucked oysters (6) were $15. My martini was $10.

The place is pricey. Make that very pricey. But the quality is of a very high order. I recommend this place.

In order of preference:

1. Telluride (American)-245 Bedford St.

Great food, sick wine list, service can't be beat. Best overall restaurant Stamford has to offer, IMHO.

2. Wish (New American)-21 Atlantic St.

Innovative menu, cool atmosphere, great desserts.

3. Mona Lisa (Italian)-133 Atantic St.

My favorite Italian in FF County.

4. Kotobuki (Japanese/Sushi)-457 Summer St.

Great special rolls, freshest sushi in Stamford...plus, you might sit next to Gene Wilder.

5. Galangal (Thai)-35 Atlantic St.

Wonderful Thai cuisine...amazing Pad Thai, great bang for the buck.

I have lived in Stamford for 10 years, after living in NYC for 10 years. Have always tried to figure out why there is virtually no good food in Stamford for years. My best theory is that it is a commuter suburb where everyone goes to bed at 9 PM and/or eats at home and so there is noone out to dinner to support the restaurants.

That said, my favorite restaurants in Stamford are:
* Kit's Thai on High Ridge
* Ole Mole on HIgh Ridge - if you order the right things like Enchildas Suizas and Carne Asada tacos
* Cafe Silvium on Shippan - is very crowded, no reservations, full of Shippan locals, but very good Italian Arthur Avenue style food for the moderate price - if a bit rushed due to their popularity

Other than that, you go down a notch to just good homey places like Mario's for pizza. Colony Grill is worth the trip for the atmosphere and unique pizza. And Pelicci's for home-style, eggplant parmigiana the size of a hubcap type food.

Let me know if there are any others! I see on the boards other places to try like Haitian place downtown, Mi Terruno, etc. Can't wait to try but have to convince the family!

one other thing to try at ole mole is the mole negro. It's not superb, compared to some great oaxacan places you find out west, but boy, it's the only mole negro I've found anywhere around the tristate.

THE major reason for the lack of quality cuisine in Stamford is the mall. They plopped it in the middle of Main Street in the 1970's. While the area might have been a bit seedy back then (well, OK, it was a slum) no one had the foresight to realize that one day the area could be overhauled with shops, restaurants, makets, bakeries, etc. South Norwalk is a prime example. Compound the fact that there is essentially NO Main Street with the Stamford Town Center offering NOTHING in terms of food, well, that's gonna create a bit of a culinary vaccuum, and that's what we have.

HOWEVER! Things are looking up. New places have opened (Dragonfly) or are on their way (PF Changs, Cheesecake Factory, Remo's). Maybe we are on the cusp of a culinary revolution in Stamford!
