Any hope? I want to make creme fraiche. I visited five different stores in my corner of Westchester (croton area) with no luck. Any that sell creme fraiche itself for that matter? I don't feel like driving far, since this is something I want to be able to make regularly. Tried Turcos, Mrs. Greens, and food emporium (yorktown), A&P and Zeytiana in Croton.

can't you find ronnybrook dairy of ronnybrook.com? i live a little north of you and can find it at Joe's Italian Market in Fishkill and Adam's Fairacre Farms in Newburgh and Poughkeepsie.

When I need a lot I go to Stew Leonards, since they have their own in a half gallon size.

thanks for the pointer; I checked out the website and there weren't any particularly close (scarsdale, bedford, cold spring). Looks like you're better off where you are.... Mt. Kisco I get to every once in awhile, but I don't want to make a special trip there. Oh well....I did see that a couple of other Mrs. Greens (not the ones in Briarcliff and Yorktown though) do carry it, so maybe I'll start by pestering them...

Stew Leonards is really my favorite place to get some. They don't have any ultra pasteurized, and theirs has a great natural, fresh sweet taste/smell to it I don't find wiht most other cream.

Plus, their half gallon size cream is 40+% butterfat content. Most heavy cream you buy in stores in the U.S. - whether ultra or just pasteurized - is usually 36%. The extra fat content really makes a difference - especially when whipping or making into creme fraiche, which I do with their cream frequently.

If you get the pint sized at Stew's it's still great, but has a 36% fat content.

Depending on where you are in northern westchester, the danbury location of stews may not be all that far from you.

ok, I just reread your initial post and found that you are in croton. Not close to danbury stew leonards at all. I hope one of the other suggestions you received will help. I will say that I've made creme fraiche with ultra pasteurized cream before. It isn't as good, but still better than none at all. You'll need to add slightly more buttermilk and probably leave it out longer. But it will still work. If you have more questions, we can take it to the home cooking board.

Good luck!

tried the mrs. greens in Briarcliff and they had it-- plus they also had creme fraiche already made. So it's good to know it's available. Thanks for all your suggestions

I feel your pain on this one--it's one of my own pet peeves. I can't speak for NW Westchester--I live in SE Westchester, but I have had some success. Here are my sources for single pasteurized cream: Trader Joe's in Larchmont and Scarsdale and Butterworks Farm cream from Fairway (in Manhattan). Butterworks Farm is especially good, made from an all-Jersey herd with superfatted cream--thick and flavorful in a way that you don't usually get in this country. Sadly, a pint costs $4, but it's worth it to whip or as creme fraiche. Good Luck.
