We're woefully short of brunch places in northern Westerchester. On Sundays, there are a few; but I wouldn't recommend any of them. Weekday lunch isn't much better, but I can recommend a couple:

* Frodo's in Pleasantville
* Jean-Jacques in Pleasantville
* Jardin du Roi in Chappaqua (caveat: based on only one visit)

We love Sunday Brunch at Gin House Grill at Crystal Bay in Peekskill. Good variety and very good food. And a nice view of the Hudson, since the trees pretty much hide the Indian Point nuclear plant which is VERY close by!

It's not in Putnam (it's a bit over the border into Dutchess, probably 45+ minutes from you), but for a really good Sunday brunch I recommend McKinney and Doyle in Pawling.

No one mentioned Zeph's by name but I think it is the best in Peekskill. There is a place called Sue's Hudson Cafe down by the train station in Peekskill that is supposed to be really good for breakfast.

Oh, and there is a new falafel place in Peekskill on North Division Street, Royal Falafel. There's a separate thread about it here.

Lauren,

I too hope to visit Stone Barns sometime soon...

but back to your initial question.

Putnam Valley has basically nothing in the way of culinary treasures, the only real restaurant in PV is the Mexican restaurant in the "center" of town, at Oregon Corners (intersection of Oscawana lake Road and Peekskill Hollow Road).. It is nothing really to write home about, but fairly good Mexican bar food, for a night out.

In Peekskill, ther are a few great restaurants, go the the main page, hit [control] and [f] type inpeekskill and do a search. The place Magnolia's that someone else recommended is good, to get there from PV take Peekskill Hollow Road north to 301, right onto 301 into Carmel, right at the light at "T", go south on Route 6, thru two lights (lake will be on your right), after second light, Magnolia's is on your left.

Also in Carmel is a fairly decent family run Greek place, follow directions above, make right at "T", at first light make left, go down hill, it is in the shopping center on your left.

For cocktails and appetizers, we go down into Yorktown Heights to Peter Pratt's (aka Pratt's). Interesting apps, decent drinks and wine, plus you can sit outside on the veranda. Also owned by the same owner as Pratt's (Jonathon Pratt) and a partner, is Umami Restaurant, one in Fishkill, and one in Croton in Hudson. Seems like alot of folks here either like it alot or dislike it alot, so go and make your own judgement.

Another cocktail venue (or two) is Lake Mahopac, there are two restaurants on the lake that have lakeside dining/cocktails, neither great food (in my opinion) but cocktails lakeside is always fine. Post for directions / names if interested.

Also in Yorktown, is a fairly authentic German restaurant if that is your bag, called Jennifers, located in southern Yorktown by the reservoir.

Of course, if you ever want to intern at our place, bring your toque, and we will provide the cocktails and venue and ingredients...

But seriously, hope you stay in PV is a good one, and post often on your findings, or if you have questions... this site is a fantastic resource.

i'll buy you guys a drink to thank you.

one on lake mahopac is called:

Flannigan's
(845) 628-9394
156 E Lake Blvd
Mahopac, NY 10541

if you go to google, you will come up with the map

I forget the name of the other one, but it is on South Lake Blvd, west of route 6, email me for detailed directiosn if you want...

again, nothing in the way of CIA dining at these places (at least not the last time I was there), but hey, they are right on the lake...

You're probably thinking of Dockside Pub. A bunch of people I work with went there for drinks on Thursday night. I couldn't make it and did not hear how it was. The menu seems rather expensive ($10 for wings, $12 for a chicken sandwich).

ps i'd love the names of the lakeside places you mentioned.
nothing better in the summer than a good icy cocktail, some crummy nibbles and a waterside outdoor seat.
also, do you have any thoughts on the ocean house in croton?
thanks again!

Ocean House is fun; I recommend it. Their menu is schizophrenic: half New England seafood shack, half New American fish dishes. I find many of the fancier dishes a bit over the top, but that's just my taste. The specials tend to be excellent.

Bring your own wine; and come early because they don't take reservations and they fill up fast.
