mexican places in new rochelle... this is pat hammond's domain! she'll chime in shortly. In the meantime, here's a post of hers on her favorite place: http://www.chowhound.com/boards/tristate/messages/15274.html

Pat, if you read this... I've promised to you a number of times that I will try the pozole at that place. I still haven't gone. I promise I will... in the meantime, forgive me lest I incur the wrath of the chowhound gods who will banish me to an eternity of taco bell...

Anyhow, back to the original poster... if you are looking north a bit in port chester, let me know. I think I've scouted out all the mexican places there.

Just returned from "Little Mexican Cafe" at 581 Main St. in New Rochelle. Quite a disappointment. The tricolor enchiladas were served almost cold. Waitress took the plate back but when it returned it still was not even warm. Tasted like it was made a few days before and microwaved for a minute. Music was played at over 100 decibals. My wife had to put her fingers in her ears. We asked them to turn it down but after about 15 minutes the sound was reduced by maybe 15 decibals. Chicken tamale was good and the Special seafood soup was marginally OK.
We won't be going back.

-Mr. Taco on North Ave. closer to Iona has good take out for its namesake. I did have 1 bad experience as the tacos didn't "sit" well w/ me...maybe it was bad pork...

-La Herradurra is the shiznit. Great lunch special selection from $6 - $9. My favorite: 3 soft tacos, 1 chorizo, 1 pollo, and 1 bistek/beef. Yum. I have them put pico de gallo and some lettuce to top it off. Try the Mexican pizza of course. Great date place and cool walls!

-Coyote Flaco: great margaritas, nice decor, decent service--go for the free buffet during happy hour on Thursday's with a live solo/duo act. For lunch, I like to Coyote wrap, but they stopped lunch and now open at 4:00!

-El Tio (across from New Roc in the former Cinema Cafe) has a decent taco salad but is overpriced for lunch.

-Everyone seems to love Little Mexican Café. I liked the burritos. Not much in the way of decor but definitely seems pretty traditional and probably the closest to authentic cuisine.

Another is Las Palmas and I went once for lunch and just had soft tacos which were ok. There's a place on North Ave. which is a mix of Mex/Columbian I believe, right around the corner from Planned Parenthood that I would stay away from as it's the most bland food I've ever had!
