Some good restaurants off rt. 84 in Conn

I have been stopping in Danbury for lunch on my way north lately. It is just a quick stop off the highway and it always seem to have interesting new restaurants to try. For those that travel along 84 its just a five minute detour and well worth the drive. Usually we stop in the Brazilian music store and see what restaurants they recommend. They usually have sent us to good places. Though I will admit one or two have been duds.

Here is a few that we have tried and liked.

Terra Brasilis
58 main street Danbury Conn 203 778-5755 or 1282 Bridgeport CT 203 334-2262 or 94 union Ave Framingham MA 508 620-9354 We went to the Danbury branch which had good food and is new in town if we understood correctly. The restaurant is a buffet style - pay by weight and is therefore speedy. Meat is grilled as you advance in line and ranges from three cuts of beef, (sirloin, round and brisket) to chicken hearts, pork butt and some awesome pork sausage. The family thought it was one of the best lunches they have had in the area.

El Sabor
11 Railroad Place, Danbury CT. 203 748-1020 Right in downtown Danbury just to the east of main street, el sabor is a hard to miss - Howard JohnsonÂ’s blue - diner. A family owned business and a good one. I am not a great fan of Ecuadorian food, but my, did we have some great soup and chicken the other day. Took a while though. Try the specials.

Also in Danbury try
Goulash Place
for diner. I think it is off rt 6 near the ridgewood country club

Down the road aways I would recommend

Phillips Diner
740 Main street on route 6 in Woodbury. Turn north off of the highway and it is about 3-4 miles on the left. They make their own donuts that are worth the trip without the rest of breakfast or lunch. Four flavors only plain, cinnamon, chocolate or jelly. They are also known for their pies, savory and sweet.

If you know any others would love to hear them,

Nope, it's not that. I love Carol Peck's. I'm talking about an Italian place in Danbury that has the style and menu of a SoNo restaurant - on the same road as Trader Joe's heading East and it's on the left in a strip mall - very nondescript from the outside.

no prob - love Carol Pecks - are you familiar with the donuts at Rosies (old Philips)? And, the French patisserie in the next plaza over is pretty good too. Ovens of France - they have good soups for a quick lunch and delish bread & pastries.

Do they still have the same great donuts? I think the Italian place may be La Fortuna, something like that?

yes, same great donuts, even a bit better, if i dare say. the new owner is so full of life, love and energy. it really exudes over the whole place.

BTW, Phillips is now Rosie's Diner, I believe. They redid it in retro 50's/60's style. It's very cute.

there's an excellent stylish Italian restaurant off i-84 in Danbury. The name escapes me and I can't find it on google. Can anyone help me out? It's kinda trendy decor, has a bar on the left and the dining area on the right in a strip mall on the same street as Trader Joe's headed towards downtown.

I think Dr. Mike's is totally overrated. The BEST ice in the area is Ferris Creamery on Route 302, in Newtown, heading towards Bethel. There is also Ice Cream Shop on Church Hill Road, Newtown (very easy off exit 10), which is still much better that Dr. Mike's. I agree with you, that German restaurant is really good!

I agree. Dr. Mike's is ok. A little pricey (?). There is a Dr. Mike's in Monroe on Rte. 25, too. The Creamery in Newtown is to die for. I had a birthday cake from the Creamery at a friend's house and it was the best ice cream cake ever - on par with Carvel (the ultimate)

There's a Thai Restaurant, called Bangkok off of 84, exit 8, almost opposite Walmart. The food it decent, but what really stands out is their hot chili vinegar. It is so tasty, I go there more for getting to use this condiment then for the food. Also off of exit 8 is a German restaurant, in Bethel, I don't know the name. You just make a left at the light travel for about 5 miles and it's on the right. I had excellent schnitzel, and a great sausage combo platter. They have a nice garden so go on a nice day to take advantage of it. I just read an article about a Dr. Mike's ice cream also in Bethel. Sounded like it was worth checking out. Has anyone been there?

GO a little further East on 84 to exit 15 take first 2 left and look for 88 Main St South, across from Mobil Gas. Rathskeller is around back of the building and the food is great!

Try the Laurel Diner Off of 84 in Southbury for homemade corned beef Hash. Also Johns Best In Brookfield at the back of the Kohls shopping plaza makes great pizza and Italian dishes. Just up the street is Antonio's Italian Bistro which also makes very good Italian. It has a better wine list and is a little fancier than John's. John's is more of a casual family place. Widow Brown's by Stew Leonards (Danbury) makes a solid burger. Pancho's Taco's on White Street is also reputed to be very good as is Banana Brasil (I have yet to try either). You can get a Huge meal cheap at Amigo's on Lake Ave. It's a latin market with a small cafeteria. Food is excellent.

have not had an opportunity to check out the latin places, but have been to the Goulash House, and it is very decent (Eastern) European food. Very family run, and I guess the owner is also the waitress.

Another place to check out is the Sesame Seed restaurant; kinda a middle-easter/kinda veggie/kinda funky.... but tasty food, reasonable prices, and reasonable prices on wine too.

A must is Rosie Tomorrow's off exit 2, I think. Good food, good prices, great atmosphere. They also have a sister restaurant, Maggie Mcfly's, off of exit 17? Their food is pretty much all American. Try the 7 layer salad for a unique and tasty dish.
