Last night, a friend and I decided to try out some of the options available on Jersey City's Newark Ave. (off of Kennedy).

We started at Rajhbog Foods, where we each sampled an order of samosa chaat ($3.75). While it was tasty and quite spicy (as requested), I would have preferred more of a yogurt base to this. Instead, it was rather thin and soupy, but with a couple of heaping spoonfuls of channa and a quite tasty samosa crushed up. It had a nice, complex intermingling of flavors, I just would have preferred something thicker. Still, I was quite pleased. We also made note of the saffron and pistachio ice cream, which we were determined to return to for dessert.

Our next stop was Dosa Hut, where we tried one of their namesake dosas - in our case - the palak paneer masala dosa ($6). Along with the dosa comes a help-your-self bowl of sambar, which was chili-spicy, but none too flavorable. The dosa, which measured nearly two and a half feet in length, was crispy, flavorful, and full of a creamy, crumbled paneer. Towards the center was a heaping serving of potatoes with a curry flavoring (aloo masala?). Very tasty, and more than enough for two persons to split.

Nearly stuffed to exploding, we decided to at least get a small serving of the saffron ice cream. However, upon leaving Dosa Hut - it looked like everything had closed. In fact - the only thing still open (at 9:25 on a Thursday) was a sweets and vegetarian cuisne restaurant called Satkar. Although they didn't have any ice cream or kulfi, they did have a small selection of sweets. We ordered four pieces of those "cheese balls in a cardamom-flavored syrup" ($3) which were tasty. They were quite proud of their new "Cheese Frankies" - which I'll definitely have to try next time, though I have no idea what the heck they are.

  1. Dosa Hut has now been usurped by Dosa House, the latter is a few doors down (further west) and is packed with people. I think it is better too but I havent done a side-by-side. Dosa House is also veg.
