Hi,

I'm looking for suggestions for a really good butcher, located in Essex or Bergen Counties, with a good selection of meats, and low prices.

I recently moved to Montclair, NJ, from Chicago, and have not succeded in finding one.

All suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I don't know a butcher in the location you're looking for. But further south I highly recommend Sabatos -- real old-fashioned service and quality. They have spoiled me for steaks and fresh-ground hamburger.

I, too, recently moved to Montclair...well, one year ago exactly...and spent a large amount of time despairing over where to find a good butcher. Where to find a butcher, period! I grew up with old fashioned butchers, had just come from New York City with great neighborhood butchers like Florence Meat Market and have found this area pretty thin on the ground food-wise.

However, I had a breakthrough last week. I recently started catering again and decided to use the meat department at the Whole Foods in Montclair. They were exceptional. I've always used them for my everyday meat and like the fact that the cows are hormone-free, the chickens led happy lives, etc. etc. Also, the pork is Niman Ranch, which is the producer of some of the best-tasting pork in the country.

But for the party I needed advice and wanted the meat trimmed a special way. The service was exceptional (nice, professional, helpful), the meat was flavorful and reasonably priced.

My advice: Go take a look-see at the counter at Whole Foods, if you don't like what you see, ask the nice butchers behind the counter. The center cut thick-cut bacon they sell is the best anywhere.

Also: on Saturdays at the Greenmarket at Walnut Street there is a farmstand that sells its own meat. I have had very delicious stuff from them. It's a bit more hit or miss (they may not have t-bone steaks if you want them) but the quality is really good. Their poussins are without comparison. Ask them how to grill them. They'll also deliver throughout the year. When it's non-farmer's market time they take orders by phone and meet people in a parking lot and distribute their food!

let me know how you do. enjoy!

A search of this board or the Mid-Atlantic board should yield references to a German butcher shop in Union. I recall a recent thread on hot dogs mentioned them, and most family back up in NJ go there for Germanic foods.

Further south, one Route One in Fords (between the Menlo Park and Woodbridge malls), is A&G Pork Store. They are Italian, will stuff sausage if you bring your own meat (at least they did when I was a kid), sell/cater meals and Italian groceries as well as make their own sausage, and have a butcher on site.

Forget what everyone else has told you. By far the premier and most genuine of German butchers in Northern New Jersey is Kocher's. They are located at 634 Bergen Boulevard, Ridgefield, NJ. Their phone number is 201-945-7086, and their store hours are Monday to Thursday 8-6, Friday 8-7, Saturday 7:00 - 4:30. Call before you go to confirm this. Enjoy!
