Poppa Rick's has been mentioned on this Board back in January and February 2003 (with mixed reviews).

I happened upon it over the weekend and liked it so much that I feel it's worth another mention on Chowhound.

I tried the pulled pork, cole slaw, a couple of ribs and a small, homemade apple pie. Delicious.

It reminds me of the roadside BBQ shacks down in the Carolinas (which makes it a nice curiosity to find in Woodbury).

It's on Jericho Tpk in Woodbury. Phone and Fax: 631-692-6928. Mon-Sat 11 am to 7 pm, Sunday Noon to 7 pm.

I went when they first opened. Do they still only offer sandwiches, or can you get meat by the pound? I'd like to bring home a mess of brisket and pork, but don't want them sitting in buns for an hour.

Also, when I went, the brisket came slathered in sauce. I'm a dry rub person -- I like to add sauce at the last minute. Do they still serve it pre-sauced, or can you sauce your own.

I've only been there once and ate at the counter but while I was there someone came in and ordered a couple of pulled pork sandwiches "to go" and asked that the meat and buns be packed up separately. There was a guy working there with Poppa Rick who seemed confused by that request but Poppa Rick quickly sorted it out and took care of the order.

Th pulled pork didn't have BBQ sauce on it and I had fun trying some of each of the many bottles of hot sauce they have available.

The ribs were slathered in a thick BBQ sauce - I prefer "dry" too but these were pretty good. - meaty and tender.
