I need to introduce my husband to the pleasures of a white paper bag filled with zeppoles: slightly crispy, fresh from the fryer, and liberally shaken with powdered sugar. Unfortunately, in eight years of looking, I haven't been able to locate them at carnivals in my neck of the woods.

We'll be on LI the weekend of May 17 and 18 and I will drive pretty much anywhere to find a carnival with a stand selling these scrumptious morsels.

Ya'll will get all the festival foods regular stuff like zepoles and tons of amazingly good other food as well.
Oh, you are making me drool! It probably won't work in with my weekend plans, though, which have me at various places on LI over that weekend. But just in case, is the Ninth Ave. Food Festival on the 17th or 18th? Or both days?

This is not a plug, but a social call. If any of you hounds go to the festival, look for the booth with signs for "Fresh Brewed Iced Tea" and "Bubble Tea: Try it Here".

For kicks, my friend and I do this for a few NYC street fairs during the summer. We brew on site several kinds of iced tea and herbals, and whip up the best bubble tea in the city. Our vanilla malted, tamarind and passion fruit recipes are unique and delicious.

Anyway, if you see the booth stop by and say hi. I'll of course insist you taste everything on the house! I'd love to meet you. I'll be at the booth until about 1:30pm Saturday and 12:30pm Sunday, but my partner Andy will be there all day.

If people want to know, I can post the exact address of the booth when I find out where they're sticking me.

I am not sure if they will have what you seek, but I saw signs as I drove thru west islip this weekend advertising a carnival 5/14 thru 5/18. The writing was tiny, so I couldn't make out the location, but I am sure it is either at St. John's high school or behind the library. Both are visible from Montauk Hwy...and there is only about 1 mile of Montauk highway in West Islip. I may go before the weekend as my daughter has been begging me for a ride on a "Mary Go Around" since last summer. If I do, I will report back. I will even do a taste test for you! (Oh the sacrifice!!!)

Oh, you are a trooper, Tony! This sounds just like what I want. Please do let me know if you make the sacrifice. It's probably been about 15 years since the Zeppoles of my youth, and I would be crused if I revisited that memory and ended up with an inferior bag.

Agent Z (as in Zeppole) reporting in! Tried the zeppoles. They were your standard carnival models, not too greasy, but ask for just a little sugar, as the kid was a bit heavy handed. If you are trying to show someone what a carnival zeppole is like, these are a good example. Now, I have to go wash the cotton candy (yuch) off my son's head, hands, clothes, etc...over and out. Hope you enjoy if you go.

It is supposed to rain Saturday morning, but clear up by evening and be nice on Sunday. I think the carnival starts up around 1 or 2 on Saturday and Sunday. Hope you have fun. Actually, the best thing I ate there were some Italian Pasteries that were from a bakery called Villa Bella, which is in Lindenhurst and is quite good. Let me know if you need directions....as I said, the school is right on Montauk Hwy just west of the Robert Moses Hwy.

As for why they don't have Zeppole's at carnivals in MAss., that is surprising. I thought I heard that Italians have settled up there (:^D)

Have fun...Tony

I love cheesy carnival zeppoles, also, but why live in the past? There's a new fat filled deep-fried sensations that you should seek out. Doughreos (not sure on the spelling) are oreos breaded in zeppole batter and deep fried. I'm not kidding, these are real. I have to admit as repulsed as I was by the idea I've eaten and enjoyed them. Everyone I was with at the time was equally repulsed, but also enjoyed these abominations. I'm convinced they were invented in Scotland.

By the way this is by no means an endorsement, but a lot of Long Island Carnivals are run by Silver Dollar Shows. Apparently they cover other parts of NY as well as CT and VT. See their web site below for a handy calendar of fairs and carnivals.

Been there, done that and not impressed. The oreo filling melted into the cookie and we were left with warm chocolate wafer cookies dipped in fried batter that quickly became tough and were drowned in powdered sugar. It took away what makes an oreo cookie special and combined it with the worst aspects of deep frying. Not worth the effort.

Thanks for the link though!
