The last like 2,000 times I've gone shopping, the only fish available are: farmed salmon, scrod, flounder, swordfish, and tuna. None of it of great quality. Considering half of these are fished-out, near-endangered species, this is totally frustrating and pathetic!

My stores are Peck's (Pine Plains), Grand Union (Millerton), La Bonne's (Salisbury, CT), Tiberio's IGA (Red Hook), and sometimes Stop & Shop (Rhinebeck).

Does anyone out there have a local source for decent fish? ISO mackeral, red snapper, trout, steelhead, whiting, smelt, tilefish . . . anything?

Northern Dutchess is my beat, but I go as far as NW Conn. and into So. Columbia to shop. Great Barrington, Kingston, and Poughkeepsie are just too far--40 miles minimum.

It's only about 10 minutes from either Red Hook or Rhinebeck to Adams Fairacre Farms in Kingston. Adams is right off the Route 9W North exit. Their fish department is excellent. The fish is always fresh and well-displayed. Last week, the varieties available (in addition to the usual suspects that you named) included trout, wild salmon, red snapper, halibut, monkfish, tilapia, char, catfish, dry scallops, fresh gulf shrimp, mussels, clams, crab legs, lobsters. With a great (and very reasonably priced) butcher department and excellent produce, I find Adams a one stop shop that is worth going the extra few miles.

Yeah, Adam's is okay. I go there if I'm crossing the river anyway, but from my home it's 40 miles. Thanks for the post, though.

Gadaleto's Fish Market & Restaurant in New Paltz is pretty good. Though if Poughkeepsie's too far, New Paltz is out of the question I suppose. This may not help you Lucia, but perhaps others who read this thread... I'm in Orange Co. so I don't know your area all that well enough to suggest anything.

New Paltz is over an hour's drive from me, but thanks. Much of the food around here is fine, but it's so darned hard to find interesting, fresh fish.

I'm in Kingston too, and I know you said 40 miles, but if you're at the Stop & Shop, we're not too much further. There's a fish market called The Cousins just past Adams on 9W in Lake Katrine--they supply a lot of area restaurants. If you're not thrilled w/Adams, you could try Cousins, although I realize it's not your neck of the woods. Good luck with your search! Also, there's Van Wie Natural Foods in Hudson--they have some fish, although they mainly sell organic beef, chicken & pork.

Just to follow along, I know that Adams might be a stretch, but it probably is the closest place with a real choice and quality to match. As a point of information, when I was at Van Wie in Stockport (probably an equally big stretch) I was told that they bring in fish directly from Boston/New Bedford/Glouscester but only on Fridays.

You might even consider calling Central Market in Germantown. I've had beautiful fish from there, but I have the feeling that choice is very limited. I should think it would be worth a call.

What's the deal with Central Market? I've only been in there once, and they seemed very solicitous but didn't have much on offer. Does it pick up in summer? Is it a new business? I'll go in again sometime when I'm over there. What's good?

Thanks!
