Hi, all,

Just recently moved out to Larchmont from NYC and have not had a whole lot of luck finding a decent bagel. This seriously impinges on the Sunday brunch with the NY Times activity. Can anyone recommend a really good bagel in Lower Westchester? You know the kind I want, one with a seriously firm outer shell and a glorious color and one that is not soft and mushy.

Thank you in advance for your suggestions!

That bagel place is still there - and still draws quite a local (yes, larchmont would count) fan base - it's called Lenny's and its right next to a blockbuster video store on ridge street in RyeBrook (about 1 mile past Rye). There is also a decent bagel place in PortChester - in the Kohl's shopping center - technically Route 1 - again right as you leave Rye. I believe it is called the Bagel Emporium and their bagels are great.

Yeah, I know about Lenny's in Rye Brook (I grew up there, actually) and Lenny's even has a place on the Upper West Side (Broadway in the high 90's). But, I sort of figured that there has to be something more. Something old fashioned, not that there isn't a place for Lenny's Jalapeno bagels with huge pieces of peppers inside (great with orange marmalade).

Try the Scarsdale Bagels, 52 Garth Road on the Scarsdale/Eastchester border. It's classic. Only about 8 kinds and nothing wacky. The owner brings them from the ovens to the bins right in front of you and they are always hot.
Not only can I personally testify to their greatness; but my late father who grew up in the delitcaessen business averred they were the best HE had ever eaten.

Flagel -- could be, thelibra, could be. No, it wasn't bread like, it was like a bagel run over by a car.

Big, toasty, with a hole, and with just enough mooshy inside (and oh the everything had tons of everything on it) to be 'to die for'. Sadly, our trips to that area involved my terminally ill dog.

But I can't recommend the NY bagel place enough, and happily, H&R Bialy (I must check out their sign!) is as close as I've found.

I also know that many do not have a high oppinion about Stew Leonards but I love their bagels and they are made the tradtional way - you can watch. I also do not understand the appeal of Lennys bagels but they are definitely round with a hole in the middle.

I think the best is right near you -- Village Square Bagels on Boston Post Road, US 1, in Larchmont. They also have very good nova, sturgeon and the like. It's a friendly, pleasant place, ideal to sit and have an everything bagel with cream cheese and nova and a cup of coffee (Green Mountain, which they serve hotter than anyone this side of a McDonald's lawsuit).

This morning I had terrific bagels from Scarsdale Bagels -- because they were still warm, fresh out of the oven. Other times, when they've been sitting around for a while (which is usually the case), they're eh. Generally speaking I prefer Village Square, which I find tastier although they do offer a softer product than does Scarsdale Bagels, which makes the hard shell type you might favor.

Of course, there are good bagel places. My entire family likes Sammy's...up Weaver Street on the left near Five Corners in Scarsdale or on North Avenue in New Rochelle. (I think it is better than H&H.) We have friends who like the bagel place in the Food Emporium Shopping Center off Quaker Ridge Road in
New Rochelle. My wife disagrees with me but I like the bagels from a place on the Boston Post Rd., just below Stefenson (Sp?) Blvd., as you are going into New Rochelle. What a great adventure you are in for, be it these places, or other spots in White Plains or Rye.

Obviously, I eat bagels since I am familiar with all the spots that have been recommended -which, with one exception, I would rate as "good" to "very good". What amuses me is that the exception is a place that the reviewer is very, very positive about, and where I have purchased bagels 2x, and which I would now avoid -so it is a very personal preference. But you won't starve....

Thank you all for the taking the time to help ease my transition from NYC to Westchester. I have tried several suggestions and I think that the place I preferred the most is the bagel shop in the Quaker Ridge Shopping Center, off Quaker Ridge Road in New Rochelle. The bagels are superb with a strong crust, a chewy interior, and a wonderful taste. Hot, they were transporting. These bagels were everything that a bagel should be and the diametric opposite of the soft, pillowy, over sweet things that pass for bagels in certain parts of the country.

Thanks again for all your help!

The bagels are wonderful early in the morning, particularly when they are too hot to eat. Crisp crust, soft inside. As the day progresses, the bagels are good when fresh but not very good when they've been sitting. Personally, I think their shelf life is something around 3 hours. Try them again at 8am and let me know what you think.

Also, there is a very good set of bagel backeries in the Heathcote Shopping Center and one in the Quaker Ridge Shopping Center. They have their devotees. We tend to shop in the Trader Joe's Shopping Center in Larchmonet where there is a large bagel bakery with many institutional customers. I'm happy with any of these places and always considered H&H to be overpriced and with a reputation it did not deserve.
