Anyone know of any good Mexican places in Northern Westchester or Putnam county (other than Cactus Jack's)

We like Cactus Jack's, but we eat Mexican often, and would like to add some variety. We've also tried Santa Fe in Tarrytown and Guadalajara in Briarcliff Manor. Santa Fe was decent, but wouldn't make the trip down for it. Guadalajara was OK, except for a tiny "visitor" at our table. (I'd like to think it was an isolated incident...)

Los Girasoles in Mount Kisco has pretty good food. I'm no expert on Mexican cuisine, but it's definitely not Chili's, or those Chinese-run Mexican take out places (although they have their place). I especially like the guacamole, which they make fresh at your table.

Been meaning to try a place in Ossining called "Scorpions" - supposedly Mexican/Ecuadorian food. I think Jim Leff wrote an article about an expedition to Ossining, where he found good Mexican in a different Ecuadorian restaurant... will see if I can find it.

I forgot - We've been to Acapulco (Cafe? Acapulco) in Cortlandt (Take Route 9 to Buchanan exit, turn north towards Buchanan/Peekskill). It's after the Croton Unitarian Church, just past the Citgo station, on the east side of the road (Albany Post Road, I believe). Pretty fresh, good margueritas, friendly staff.

Hmm... gonna go back there...

Did you mean Puerta Vallarta? Couldn't find Acapulco...

We tried Puerta Vallarta. The food and margaritas were good. And, the staff was friendly enough. However, I don't know if they were having an off night (there was a party going on in the back), but the service was horribly slow. They seated us right behind the register, and dropped a tray on my wife, and then knocked a glass over onto the table. My wife's entree was supposed to come with tortillas, which they neglected, and even when we asked for them, they said they were coming, yet never arrived.

I'd like to try it one more time, as the food was indeed good, and perhaps they were overwhelmed with the event in the back.

Sorry the service was not up to par... I think your assessment about the party being the problem is accurate... Glad you enjoyed the food! Do try again - our three or four visits, plus take out, have been steady, good experiences...

There's another place in Ossining I think called Acapulco (on Route 9), another called La Puerta (Main Street) and another, Guadalajara in Briarcliff. I have friends who live down that way, so I'll inquire... still want to try Scorpions (Mexican/Ecuadorian) in Ossining...

Hey, Nancy

I tried Guadalajara in Briarcliff Manor. The food/ambiance was good, as were the margaritas...basically, we were very happy. That is, until something small, quick, and many-legged crawled right past our table. Perhaps this is authentic Mexican, I don't know, but it put a damper on an otherwise very pleasant meal.

Ragardless of your experience I vote for Guadalahara in Brircliff. I found it to be clean, with excellent, authentic cuisine. Must give very low marks to Cactus Jacks. Unappealing food with a limited menu.

if you are up in the Danbury area, try Tortilla Flats.

It's back in the woods by Candlewood Lake. Fairly decent, not much for ambiance. Prices are fair, unlike some other Mexican joints. The porko verde (spelling) pork medallions in a salsa verde sauce is a fair bet, many slices of pork, with a salad, beans, rice, tortillas, etc, about $10.

Decent margiatias too.

Would not even try to give directions, give them a call if you are in the Danbury area.
