Suffolk Co., LI: Restaurant Inspections Online

The Suffolk County Department of Health Services have now put their restaurant inspection database online, similar to the way the NYC Department of Health has posted theirs.

The database is at: http://www.co.suffolk.ny.us/health/CF...

As of way of checking just how clean your favorite restaurants are, it's of little use. It only lists critical violations, so apparently only 16 establishments in the entire county have any violation noted. Also, all records of a critical violation are removed once the condition has been corrected. It won't tell you how clean your local restaurant's kitchen is, just that you're not likely to die from any problems they may have found.

The real usefulness of the database is as a way to locate those elusive restaurants you've heard about but can't seem to find in the phone book. It's also a good way to go neighborhood by neighborhood and look for restaurants that sound interesting and may have escaped your notice. The page allows you to search by restaurant name, to see all restaurants in a particular town, or to search by name and location.

Does anyone know if Nassau County has also made their data available, or has any plans to?

  1. It would be nice to have a similar site for Nassau restaurants, but don't hold your breath. Not only is the county's budget a mess, they're about a century behind the times as far as technology is concerned. Such are the results of decades of political patronage.
