Southern Westchester Thanksgiving?
My in-laws have offered to take me and my husband out to dinner for Thanksgiving. The question is where. They are not terribly adventurous eaters, and they want to spend $400 or less for 4 three-course meals. This figure should include a bottle of wine and at least two pre-dinner drinks.
Some other criteria: great food, nice ambiance (maybe a view? or a fireplace?), and a special holiday menu that includes turkey and trimmings but also offers some other items (mom-in-law hates turkey and all trimmings, dad-in-law MUST have them). Southern Westchester is a plus, although a particularly wonderful place in Northern Westchester/Southern Putnam would definitely be a possibility.
If I leave the selection to my in-laws, I guarantee they'll pick some place with nightmarish food, so PLEASE help me avoid such a miserable fate on a major holiday. I'm hoping to preempt any suggestions they might make with some of my own.
Thanks for your help!
Beth,
My family has gone for Thanksgiving at Plumbush in Putnam several times and it has always been wonderful. There is a small but good/wide selection for all courses and usually even the turkey lovers among us ends up ordering something else for a main course.
The place is elegant and spread over several rooms in a large house, with a piano player and providing atmosphere.
It's a prix fixe menu and even if you drink a lot you will be well under your in-law's budget.

Check out Equus in "The Castle at Tarrytown" Very special place in a castle with good food and service and they usually have a prix fixe for the holiday. Check out the prices to see if it fits into your budget.

Look into Park Place in Riverdale, right over the Westchester line. Superb quality American fare. It's built into an old home, so the restaurant is on street level, but there are several private rooms upstairs. Party of four may not warrent it, but the rear dining room has excellent fireplace. A Thanksgiving sort of place. you can test drive one evening and without booze or desert, $50-75 for 2.

Peter Pratt's Inn in Yorktown Heights would be my suggestion... 10 minutes or so away from Taconic Parkway... nestled in woods at top of hill.. historic, great food the one time I've been there (date near Christmas with father/stepmom, since we go to husband's family for Christmas). Old farmhouse/inn, fireplace and all. Good service, good wine selection.. Can't recall price range, but I think it's in ball park. Check out Zagat online, maybe a web page link?

Just over the CT border is the Hyatt Regency Greenwich. It has a great Thanksgiving buffet. Lots of food options in a nice atrium dining area.
