We're driving from NJ to LaGuardia on Thursday. My is a newly transplanted Texan and this is his first trip to Queens.
Any suggestions for a place to eat dinner? We like every kind of food. We'd like to try something not usually found outside of Queens. Thanks!

what do you think he might like? queens happens to have the largest variety of cuisines concentrated within a few square miles than anywhere else on this planet, so your possibilities are boundless.

We'd like to try something we can't get in Central NJ. Caribbean? Phillipine? Indonesian? An unusual variety of Indian or Pakistani?
And near the BQE or LaGuardia...
Thanks

You won't really find good Indonesian in Queens -- there's good Indian in Jackson Heights; but Really Excellent Filipino cuisine is to be had in Woodside. Two good bets are Ihawan and BJ's, both covered in Jim's book; and if you roam around the neighborhood -- from a few blocks east of Ihawan to a few blocks west -- you will find several other places, all (Well, I haven't actually been to *all* of them) worth a visit.

Out of towners (especially meat lovers) usually love it when I take them to a real NYC kosher deli. SO take the Grand Central (EAST)from the Airport and get off at the L.I.E. exit. Don't get on the L.I.E. but stay to the right and you will end up in the service lane to the L.I.E. Take this to Junction Blvd. (2 or 3 lights) and make a left, crossing under the L.I.E., go 2 more lights and make a right on 62nd and then a left onto Queens Blvd. into the service lane. A block or two down (betw. 63rd Drive and 64th Road) is....

BEN'S BEST DELICATESSEN...the best pastrami, incredible turkey, good corned beef, really good potato knishes....

(It's also right by the 63rd Drive stop on the G & R subway lines.)

MMMMM! They don't make this stuff in Texas!

Hey, Val

first of all, this actually belongs on our "Outer Boroughs" board...though Queens is certainly part of the tristate area!

I don't usually baldly hawk my book, but it covers lots of Queens faves (other boroughs, too) that are probably just what you're looking for. I wrote it for those in situations exactly like yours. For info see link below.

You are indeed drinking from a firehose. "Near the airport" are maybe 300 restaurants fitting your bill. I'll give you a good one. Pio Pio (84-13 Northern Boulevard (between 84 and 85 Streets), (718) 426-1010) makes wonderful peruvian rotisserie chicken, great pisco sours (like a whiskey sour that went to grad school), fabulous tostones (fried starchy plantains), and great french fries (not exotic food nominatively, but just try to find great french fries these days!). It's a beautiful setting, maybe the coolest ambiance (I mean "designed" kind of ambiance...the arepa lady has great "undesigned" ambiance at her cart under the subway!) in Queens. It's not expensive, service is friendly, and it's two minutes from Laguardia.

When you're done, go for a drive down Roosevelt Avenue (start at about 96 street). In fact, eat light at Pio Pio and get bites as you go down Roosevelt. It's hard to park, so just grab spaces as you see them and walk around. It's not a dangerous area per se, but do keep guard up at night. If Roosevelt Ave is too intense (or you've covered it and want to see more), go back the other way on 37 Ave, which runs parallel and to the north.

These streets are the chowhound's equivalent of a stroll down The Ramblas or the Champs Elysees.

hope that helps

Oh, maybe also stop for great texas barbecue and a beer at Pearson's/Legends at 35th Ave (one block north of 37 ave) between 71 and 72. You can find my review of this place linked to from our homepage.

ciao
