Hey, "good deli, no fuss" sounds exemplary in today's
lame deli climate (I wince every time I read out-of-
town food writers talking about how this or that deli
"rivals the quality of delis in New York").

Umberto's has turned into a James Bond Villain
Corporation (JBVC), with branches everywhere, and you
wouldn't even recognize the pizza. The original New
Hyde Park branch is still pretty good, but not what it
once was, alas.

That reminds me...does anyone remember when the
ubiquitous Pudgie's Fried Chicken (now another JBVC)
was a seedy mom-and-pop chicken and ribs joint in
Hicksville? It was GREAT then. Overnight they turned
into a plastic franchise (apparently entirely financed
by the same Mom and Pop....their mattress must've been
pretty stuffed!) making crappy chicken. I went back to
the original branch, and it, too, had been plasticized,
with Mom and Pop long gone...probably in some swanky
office on 57th Street, taking meetings and stuff.

Sorry, feeling depressed about all this decline and
corporatization.

1)Deli King has a "branch" a few doors down - Dairy King. Both favorite haunts of my folks, who live a matzohball's-throw away. 2)It's the Silver Moon Diner, redone a few years ago and looking very "Art Deco" on the outside. 3)Umberto's... ate there with the mishpocheh a couple of months ago. Things change, things change. No more enormous veal cutlets to make a meal of the next day, and the red sauce (of which I used to order an extra gravy boat so I could drown in it) jest ain't the same.
BTW, Jim, the new site looks luv'ly!
