Atlantic City eats

I happen to be from atlantic city. I don't know if
you still go much, but if you do there are really only
5 places worth eating at that I know of. (At least,
there are five that I go to when I'm there.)

P & G's italian market, near Chelsea and Atlantic is
terrific, but don't go when it's crowded. They can't
handle capacity. But great spaghetti carbonara,
braciole, etc. Also the best cheesesteaks and pork
sandwiches going, although of course I see the merit
in the White House. (Although for that style of steak
you would do better at Jo Jo of Ventnor, which is NOT
operated by Jean George Vongerichten. Although I'm
sure he would like it...

Imperial Inn, a block south, is a really good chinese
restaurant with good hanging pork, suckling pig,
cuttlefish, duck, etc. About as good, I would say, as
Joe's Peking Duck house in Philadelphia, the trans-
hudson standard for noodle houses.

Mexico restaurant, two blocks south of Albany on
Atlantic avenue, is a very genuine mexican restaurant
and very good. I hear there are three or four places
that authentic in NY (one is supposed to be near the
Corner Bistro) but I've never tried them. My wife
knows mexican food and really likes it.

Angelo's Fairmont Tavern always had the best veal
parmigan in the world, but I haven't been there in
years. It was as old AC as you could get though, and
had homemade wine and shumsky's cheesecake, so there's
that. It's on georgia or florida and Fairmont.

finally, no one can say they ate in Atlantic City
without having had a sausage pizza at Tony's Baltimore
Grill. Forget that place Jim went to in the basement
-- this is the ne plus ultra of hardcore Atlantic City
culture. The pizzas are small, cheap, and really
great -- but you have to get the sausage, which is a
secret old time recipe they bought from a butcher
named Bongiovanni, who was their supplier until he
went out of business. Now they have a Ventnor butcher
make it for them and it's just as good.

thanks for the great message, Josh!

"Forget that place Jim went to in the basement"

    I'm TRYING....BELIEVE me!!!

Josh is referring to Chef Vola's, which I wrote about
in the March 11 installment of "What Jim Had For Dinner
Last Night". Use the link below, and scroll down the
    page to March 11.

Oh...and for Jersey folks who use the Outerbridge
Crossing, check out the August 30 entry for a great
diner just over the bridge in Staten Island.
