Skip Hunan Ritz in Thornwood

I'd heard good things about Hunan Ritz in the Rose Hill
Shopping Plaza on Kensico Ave. in Thornwood and I
hadn't been there for years, so we gave it a try last
night. It was a disappointment.

The food was OK. The best dish was an appetizer of
steamed crab legs, which were delicious but showed no
evidence of _Chinese_ cuisine. They were served plain
with clarified butter. Hot and sour soup was pretty
good, unusually beefy with lots of goodies,
surprisingly including inoki mushrooms. Their special
five-flavor duck was unexciting.

If you're in this area and want Chinese, I prefer the
place on 141 a few blocks south of the intersection
with Kensico Ave. It just changed its name to Pacific
something; I can't recall what.

  1. I second the Hunan Ritz pan. Last time there was so
much MSG in the food that we had headaches and felt
sick for the rest of the day. It used to be much
    better.

Pacific Palace is the new name of that other place (on
    141 in Thornwood).

There's another Chinese restaurant with a similar name
in Mt. Kisco, just up from the movie theater on 117. I
think it's called Pacific. They make their own
noodles, which made me optimistic, and indeed some of
the noodle dishes are quite fresh and delicious--but
    the service stinks--really rude!!!--so we're not going
    back.

There's a place in Hartsdale across from the train
station (not on Central Ave, if you can believe it)
which has a number of unusual dishes. Not sure how
traditional it is, since they seem particularly
interested in "healthy" food, but at least it's been
pretty reliable. Cold tofu salad with spicy dressing,
decent cold sesame noodles with a choice of white,
    whole wheat, or spinach noodles...

I've been to the place in downtown Hartsdale. I've
found it to be quite good. Many of their dishes are
Chinese-Western hybrids, but they do it well. They
offer a fairly extensive vegetarian menu.

        Josh,

Thanks for the thrill of seeing THORNWOOD when I clicked onto this board! You made my day!

We lived there for 9 years and thought we'd be there forever.

We've been banished to Princeton, NJ. You think Hunan Ritz is bad? You should see some of the Chinese food down here. Oh, well. Thanks, again!

No, I don't think it's bad. It's OK, but no better
than that. There are plenty of places to get _bad_
Chinese food, but I try not to think about them.

My message to you was meant in a very light-hearted manner.

It appears that you didn't take it that way.

E-mail is like that, unfortunately. With nothing but
the text to go on, I try to take words at their face
value because otherwise I'm _certain_ to be
misinterpreting them 9 times out of 10. Smileys are
cutesy, but they really are necessary ;)
