I posted this before but they were updating the board. Hope it doesn't show up in various forms later....

Anyway, Melanie had a post about how I should consider bringing frozen custard (which has made it to Reno but apparently not to SF) to the Chowhound picnic. This reminded me to post my sad story/ask my question: Just how long do you think this shindig will last? I have to be in Reno Saturday am the 4th, and the soonest I could make it to the park (assuming the traffic gods cooperated) would be around 4 pm. Is this way too late?? Will there be any food left? Should I just move?

In case anyone cares (doubtful)I decided to forgo Little Nepal during my (very) brief visit this weekend. After all, I can have excellent "sub-continental" food anytime I can convince my husband its his turn to cook. Dim Sum, on the other hand, is a rare treat here in the hinterlands. So Saturday am I enjoyed a solitary lunch at Yank Sing (chosen for its known reliability and accessibility to one not used to driving the city streets....). I ate WAY too much, but enjoyed my meal. I particularly enjoyed the stuffed friend shrimp. Nice taste and texture, and not greasy. I ordered Chinese Chicken salad, as I am still looking for the definitive version of that dish. It was good, but a little salty for my taste, and too big a serving for one. The definitive Chinese Chicken Salad was at the long gone China Station in Berkeley (IMO).....I also enjoyed pork sui mai (sp?), shrimp dumplings, sticky rice with pork, Chinese broccoli, and mango pudding (and two pots of tea!) After all that food, it was a sleepy drive back to Reno, punctuated only by frequent pit stops (all that tea.....)

In past years the picnic has wound down by four, although a few stalwarts hung around to relax, finish the wine, clean up, etc. Rob will still be cooking his paella, though.

I think you should just move!

I too think you should just move, but first you should convince the frozen custard folks to open down in the Bay Area! I haven't had frozen custard since I moved out here and I also haven't been to Reno since I moved here, but the temptation ....!

As Ruth said, the picnic is usually winding down around then, but depending on how much wine there is left to finish there are still folks there (kind of depends on the weather that day too, the sunnier, the better!)

And Rob has this reputation for showing up ultra-late to make a paella on the grill - it's delicious and usually only those people who hang out late get to taste it.

Hope to see you on Oct. 4!

well, don't want to move until the kids get out of high school....

maybe you should come to Reno some day; my husband will cook his famous Indian chicken and potato stew, and we could go for custard for dessert!

Went there tonight. Strawberry..yum! Perfect on a hot night!

And yes, I really miss China Station.
