If you are looking for a wonderfully "old Fashioned" Italian restaurant, I would advise a trip to 72nd St and 8th Ave to try the classic New Corner Restaurant in the Dyker Hts section of Brooklyn.
It has been there since about 1939, and it has maintained that old style atmosphere. The food is very decent, (order from the daily black board specials)
The waiters are full time, old style, professional waiters. Do not expect nouvelle cuisine, just very solid, home style food. The portions are very generous and the prices are very reasonable. Some may turn up their noses b/c it's a very non trendy place, but it defines old fashioned in terms of food, atmosphere and service.... I have seen, couples, friends and large families, all enjoying "take your time," dining.
The only word of caution: While children are very welcome, there are heavily laden trays of hot food constantly being transported, so it is NOT a place where children can safely run around.
As an bonus, it is one of the only areas in Bay Ridge/Dyker Hts where you can actually find a parking space without having to get there 3 hrs in advance!

There is also that pretty well established old school Italian place on Court Street. It's been there for a gazillion years. The name escapes me.

Brennan & Carr is still very much around, last I checked. You're thinking of the old Jahn's that was near Leon's bakery next to the Key Food- that's what became Chinar.

I made the same mistake when I tried in vain to find "Fernando's" years ago. By the way: if you go (and you should!), try the panelle.

I gotta tell you, I had dinner at New Corner a couple of months ago and thought it was mediocre at best. Understand I was not looking for anything nouvelle--or anything authentically Italian for that matter--just solid red-sauce Italian-American cooking. But I didn't find it. The bread was terrible, the meats we had were tough, the pasta was overcooked and the sauce watery, the salad was unspeakable. There were some good fried potato croquettes, but that was pretty much the only good thing we ate. Believe me, I wanted to like the place--and I generally do like unreconstructed establishments like this one. It just didn't seem like anyone in the kitchen cared very much.
That said, the parking situation was excellent.

I am sorry to hear that your dining experience at New Corner was so abysimal. I have eaten there so many times, and, while definitely not a knock-your-socks-off, experience, I have never had a bad meal there. I would absolutely agree with your assessment of their after thought of a dinner salad. I guess that is what makes this message board so interesting: One person's experience can be so different from another's.
I hope Tracy ( the original asker of the old fashioned, question,) continues to read, and take under consideration, our varying experiences.

Next time your at Joe's on Ave U walk a few blocks to Dairy Made, fresh Italian pastas (all sort of ravioli) & sauces that you can make yourself in minutes.
I've also recently discovered Joe's & it is great. Others of that ilk include Circles on Coney Island Ave. and Ave. Z (great pizzas), Michael's in Midwood (best desserts) and Basset's deli on Ave. X and E. 14th St. (heroes).
