Red Velvet cake from Cake Man Raven
Has anyone tried the Red Velvet cake from Cake Man Raven in Ft. Green? Is it worth it? I've read so many good things about it. I just want to make sure it's not all hype.
I'm thinking of ordering one for my Dad's birthday this saturday and I need to decide quickly because from what I've heard they need at least two days advance notice for a whole cake.
though I was unable to get a red velvet cake from the Cake Man for my birthday due to long wait times, my boyfriend and I wandered in on a recent Sunday night. they only had unfrosted red velvet cupcakes and some sort of pineapple cake. both were DIVINE. even unfrosted, the red velvet cupcakes were rich and well, velvety. It really put Amy's Bread to shame. So, I'm a convert. Though I wonder how others on this board compare Two Little Red Hens red velvet cakes to the Cake Man. thoughts?
I agree with the posts. Yes, the Cake is fabulous. The service is not what it should be. He needs people to work for him who have aspirations too. Most of the people working in that store, have no character and do not respect themelves, let alone, the man's business. That's what happens when you employ some folk. They are just lazy!
CakeMan Raven's has a very strong potential in being the best (creativity, design, and taste EXTRAORDINARE).
I've had both good and bad experiences.
i used to go to cake man raven for red velvet and yes, it's good and the service is horrible. about 2 months ago, 2 little red hens started making red velvet cake and it's amazing...real southern red velvet, much much better than cake man and the service is terrific!
I LOVE the cake, but hate the service. We ordered a cake for our wedding party and they gave us a pick up time.
When we got to the shop there were irate people waiting for their cake orders. One woman was missing part of her son's birthday party because the cake wasn't ready. Needless to say, our cake wasn't ready on time. They offered no apology. Luckily, we live nearby and was able to go back and pick it up a few hours later.
We didn't check the decoration. Mistake. When we pulled out the cake to cut it, they'd left off a couple of letters of my husband's name. The order form had his name spelled correctly.
I took photos, and we cut the cake. But I was upset. Not only was the cake hours late, but they messed up the decoration.
I left numerous messages and finally got in touch with someone and was told someone would get back to me, but after a couple of days of no phone calls, I had to go to the store.
They gave me half the money back for the cake. I thought that was fair considering the cake was very good.
We still get slices, but the cake is yummy.
cake man raven is hands-down my favorite cake in the city, and i've tried a lot. i frequently recommend it over magnolia and other popular bakeries.
i've made red velvet cake a number of times and sampled many versions in a number of cities and cake man's really is the best.
also, as a random add-on, angelina bakery in manhattan used to do an amazing blue velvet cake! i think they only custom-make them these days from the cafe in soho. it is fun and really delicious.
