Dim Sum in Brooklyn Chinatown for a non-meat eater?

I have a friend coming to visit who would love to go have dim sum in Brooklyn's Chinatown this weekend. I've never been anywhere except for Vegetarian Dim Sum House in Manhattan because I have been afraid that it would be too difficult to avoid pork at a traditional dim sum place, but I would love to be able to accompany him on a dim sum adventure.

Does anyone have any recommendations for places or dishes that might be good bets for me? I will eat seafood, but no other meats.

Thanks!
JD

For Vegetarians stick to Veg Dim Sum house or Veg. Paradise.
If you really want to give it a try, you can get a plate of Chinese broccoli or a bowl of fresh tofu (mmm...warm and soft served out of large wooden kegs and dressed with pancake syrup). Shrimp rolls are made without pork, and maybe the clams in black bean sauce.

In my experience, EVERY other dish has been kissed with pork...

World Tong on 18th Ave is by far the best dim sum I have had in Brooklyn, better than any of the sunset park places.

You should know, however, that seafood and veg dim sum at classical dim sum houses typically contains animal fat for flavor. that's why it tastes so good. If you simply avoid visible meat, there are plenty of good dishes to be had there.

        Thanks Jen.

I'll steer him towards World Tong, and maybe I'll go out with him for sushi the night before.

if going to World Tong, get their early - food quality tails off after noon. We had a great meal at 10:30 OR 11, a relatively mediocre one ( fewer dishes and not as hot) at 1.

No doubt that mornings are probably the better bet, but our dim sum last weekend at 1pm was varied, hot and very tasty. Recommendation on everything with shrimp (many, many choices) &, believe it or not, the little purple dessert balls: they have chestnut filling. Of course, I also loved the tripe with garlic and ginger and a couple of other things that are a lot stranger. If you're adventurous, this is the place to try them.

What's with those gigantic chicken feet? Ya think that they're disproportionate to the rest of the chicken or are there 50-foot mutated hens running around somewhere?

Im really glad to hear you had better luck, when they are on they are great - maybe their weekend rush is extending, but personally, I wouldnt take the chance of going late and having a less than stellar meal again - the dishes just werent hot and fresh from the kitchen.

Just went yesterday for the first time, around 1p. A couple dishes seemed off. A pushy waiter put down a plate of crispy pork (which I would have eventually asked for anyway) in front of us, insisting "it's good, it's good, you'll like". It was already close to room temperature, though, so I'm sure it had already made the rounds for quite a while before he finally just ditched it on us.

The other sub par dish was the duck feet (probably what you noticed as chicken feet -- yeah, those would have to be some pretty big chickens). Quite a bit more rubbery than they probably should have been.

Everything else was fab, particularly the various shrimp dishes we tried. Had the good fortune to sample those purple dessert balls -- divine!

duck feet were great for us last time, but this was around 11am. nothing like feet first thing in the morning!

They ALWAYS push that pork! It's probably the most expensive thing there and not very good imho - and I love pig. But I still love World Tong.
                    The shrimp dishes are deeevine.
I love World Tong the best when I have a seat with good cart access -- the other problem is getting seated with your back to the room against a wall, at the mercy of the waiters instead of the cart ladies. It's all about the cart ladies for me, the non-Chinese speaker.

I've often wanted to go back for dinner there -- anyone have later, non-dim sum meals? They appear to have great seafood and excellent frying ability . . .
