I've got three nights in the city. What's the best hotel. I stayed at The Ritz and The Clift. I liked The Ritz. I had dinner at Gary Danko's then. What's three great places for dinner and any better suggestions for hotels. Thanks.

Hotel...The Four Seasons.

Restaurant...Chez Spencer, Limon, Masa's, Fifth Floor, or Delfina.

I'll agree with Ike! on Four Seasons and a couple of the restaurant suggestions.

Delfina puts out some of the finest northern Italian (think Piedmont, Emilia-Romagna - no red sauce) cuisine I've had in this country. Very tight, well chosen wine list too. Lovely, spot-on service.

Limon does very well thought out South American cuisine. Go soon 'cause I hear they are moving to a bigger space so growing the kitchen will be a concern.

For French I'd go a different direction than Chez Spencer. Jeanty at Jack's does bistro really, really well. I like the tradional room, the professional service, and the comprehensive French wine list. Plus they serve past the dreaded 1030p "cutoff"; we can actually walk in at 1000p and not feel like we are being rushed out the door.

If you are in the mood for sushi and can get to Sausolito, try Sushi Ran. The sushi, sashimi and rolls are of the highest quality and prepared by a staff of very talented sushi chefs who know and love their fish. Some of the kitchen creations can be delicious and inspired...choose carefully and you will be rewarded.

Cheers.

It all depends....

How about some specifics - likes/dislikes, type of cuisine, atmosphere, etc. Do you like big fancy hotels or small boutique style?

W/out a little more details, I don't know whether to send you to the best vietnamese sandwiches or a 5 course seafood tasting menu -- the Mandarin, the W or the Phoenix. What are you looking for in a restuarant and a hotel?

I agree with the previous poster that you need to give more details on exactly what you're looking for.

Assuming you're looking for restaurants comparable in price and cuisine to Gary Danko's, since that's the only one you mentioned, I would recommend Fifth Floor, Masa's, Fleur de Lys and La Folie, probably in just that order. That's just for high end French cuisine in the city of San Francisco. There's a lot more choices if you want to consider other cuisines or if you're willing to go outside of San Francisco itself.

For hotels, I've never stayed in a hotel in San Francisco, but I suspect that the Four Seasons that's been recommended by a few people already would compare favorably to the Ritz and the Clift.

Fifth Floor and Gary Danko, in that order. I am unclear about would be appropriate for the third night. I was not impressed with recent visits to Masa's (Siegel), Fleur de Lys, The Dining Room, or Aqua (last restaurant, lunch only; Manique).

If you are receptive to driving, perhaps you could stand by for French Laundry in Yountville (or, if you are planning more than two months in advance, you could book directly). It's less than 1 hour by car (without traffic) from downtown SF.

Chez Panisse in Berkeley for dinner? It's where it all began! I can't say enough good things about it. Though if you're expecting hushed atmosphere, swanky linens, and fancy food, you'll be disappointed. It's all about fresh ingredients and seemingly simple preparations there. Go!
