Matamoros Puebla's days are numbered?

Walked by Matamoros Puebla on Bedford this morning on the way to work and saw a sign in the window that said "Store for Sale." I didn't have time to go in to ask what's up, but will investigate this evening.

  1. Yeah - noticed that, too, a couple of weeks back. Hopefully it's a different store.

I went in and asked this morning. The owners are selling the place. I don't know what I'm gonna do without it.

That's probably good business sense (prime location and all). But it's pure tragedy for local chowhounds.

yeah, you can't blame them. i think they own the building maybe? they can retire.

get your sopes while you can.

They don't own the building. I've known the owner since they opened. I was just there Friday and he said they are trying to open at a location in Bayridge. The rent here in the 'burg is getting out of control for them. Will certainly miss the food but even more so they are truly warm and genuine people.

    2. Perhaps as an ex-Californian, I get a bit snooty about my tacos. But I've been to Matamoros several times now and find the tacos particularly bland -- the pollo, the el pastor and the carnitas and I get so sad and disappointed. However, I have scouted out a bodega similar to Matamoros in north Greenpoint on Manhattan called El Encanto Mexicano. They are almost everything I want in a taco -- juicy, flavorful and spicy. It's a hidden gem though, I have yet to really see anyone else in the shop.

This information really should be posted on its own thread, rather than hidden as a reply to a thread that is otherwise over a year old.

      2. Walked by today and they were gutting the place.
