I went today and tried the pork chop sandwich and an egg yolk soda. I haven't been to any of the other places talked about on the board so I can't really compare, but I liked what I had (especially at $4.25). The bread was fresh and the pork had a nice flavor without being greasy. The staff hasn't quite figured out how to do everything smoothly yet, but they were very friendly and it is only the second day of business so I didn't mind at all.

I'm sure I'll go back, but I think it will be more of an occasional than a regular thing.

I'm curious to hear from folks who have tried the good bahn mi spots around town.

I went on Monday after watching the storefront for weeks, and I have been back twice since... The classic and grilled chicken bahn mi are great. If you ask for "extra spicy" they'll load it up with peppers, but they don't have any chili paste. It's true the staff seems a bit out of sorts, but they always manage to pull it together in 5-10 minutes. All sandwiches (classic, grilled chicken, shredded chicken, pork chop, pork, and sardine) are 4.25. It's no 3.00, but still a great deal. I say definitely check it out if you're in the hood.

went there today. they have a number of sandwiches including the "classic" bahn mi, which was pretty good. tasty ground pork with thin slice of ham and some pate with cucumber/carrot. the bread was excellent. my only complaint would be the lack of cilantro, which i feel is a must on bahn mi. i wouldn't say it's up to the level of Saigon on Mott St (formerly under the Manhattan Bridge), but then again, it's in the hood and you don't have to wait 45 min for one sandwich. will definitely go back.

I went yesterday. I got the "classic". It could have used a bit more cilantro and bit less carrot, but overall it was quite fresh and tasty. They are new and working out some kinks, but I am very glad it's in the neighborhood. But, no, it's not better than Saigon Banh Mi.

Went today. Agree with the other posters below that the place has potential, and it's a good addition to the neighborhood. But the sandwich needed more flavor, even though I asked for "spicy." Next time, I am definitely going to ask for more cilantro and more heat.

i agree with you on the 'not spicy enough' front. been waiting for months for them to open, since they've been teasing us with the awning for the place. don't think that it measures up to nicky's in the east village, but definitely has potential. carrot/daikon 'salad' could use use a little more vinegar to contrast the pork/ham/pate combo.

The shop is called Hanco's. I had a shredded chicken sandwich from there tonight. The chicken tasted very fresh and not at all fast-foody. The carrot/cucumber slaw was fresh as well. I was the only one in the shop at around 7pm, and it took five minutes to prepare the sandwich–they might be ironing out the kinks, but I wonder what the delay would be when (if) they're busy. For $4.25 it was a good deal, but I didn't spring for a $3.00 bubble tea.

I don't have much frame of reference for bahn mi, but I did enjoy the sandwich.

Yeah i been to Hanco's too on 85 bergen street (Carroll Gardens/Boerum Hill) recently. Their vietnamese sandwiches are great. My favorite is the Classic. I heard it takes about 3-4 minutes to toast the bread.

I also had the original Bubble Tea and Mango Bubble Tea. It is so good and refreshing! I had tried Bubble Tea before but not as good as Hanco's. I will try another flavor next time and let you know.

I couldn't be happier to have Hanco's Banh Mi on Smith St. I had one today and there were no delays in the preparation - just the time it took to toast the bread. The owner/chef and his partner were very kind and eager to chat.

Though not on the menu, they made me a vegetarian banh mi (i.e. one with everything but the meaty/fishy fillings) which was quite tasty. I agree with the other posters that it could be spicier, but all of the vegetables were fresh and flavorful. The bread is good too. For the other vegetarian banh mi connoisseurs out there, they are going to have tofu sandwiches soon, and maybe other options as well (they were very open to suggestions about what other vegetarian options they could provide.) Now if they could replicate the delicious vegetarian sandwich at Banh Mi So #1 in SoHo (the one with the glass noodles and mushrooms) I would be there every day.

Salads and other items are coming soon, and they had a few jelly desserts too. Open till 9.
