i am moving next month to an apt. off of the graham ave stop in williamsburg and i am interested in learning more about some good take out places, restaurants, coffee places with wireless internet, and good grocery stores. i lived there three years ago - but i am sure alot has changed since then!

i am already familiar with most of the restaurants off/near bedford. i would love to learn more about places around the lorimor, graham, and grand stops.

thanks in advance!

This is the heart of an old Italian neighborhood where most of the residents' ancestors came from one tiny town in southern Italy: Teggiano. Cono is the patron saint of that town, and there are at least five restaurants named Cono or with a chef named Cono. I believe that years ago Jim Leff wrote that Cono & Sons O'Pescatore was just about the best of its type in NYC, so old-school authentic that they use Neapolitan techniques that are hard to find even in Naples.
There's also Frost, La Locanda, lots of others. And the nearby giglio festival in July is a very big deal.

I can second Brian's rec of Cono's and Frost Street Restaurant. I was just at Cono's for Christmas Eve dinner which was very good. Had umpteen different fish courses and every thing was exemplary. You also should know that they have a takeout counter on the side of the building for not only their regular menu but also really killer Hero's; in particular their Pork Cutlet Parmigiana with fried hot peppers. Also Sausage with Broccoli Rabe and Mozzerella.

I was at Frost Street Restaurant the week before that and THAT was also great. I'd say their fried Calamari is absolutely the very best I've ever had; not battered or loaded with breading but just lightly dusted with flour/fine crumb and quickly fried. I also had Red Snapper Oreganata, perfectly cooked and again if it were any fresher, it would have been jumping around on the plate. :) :)

For MiddleEastern: Uncle Mina's 436 Union Ave,near Metropolitan Ave. Excellent Falafel, Salads all made in small batches and so, are fresh and "homemade". Shwarma etc. Its a couple doors down from ...

Dumont, another restaurant that's generally well spoken of here (their mac and cheese is supposed to be out of this world) though I've not been yet.

Hope this gives you a good start.

Also, a new 24 hr. "natural" supermarket, a sort of a Whole Foods-ish kind of place, has just opened on Union s. of Metropolitan.

I second all other recommendations here. Fortunato's is particularly special, with fine cheesecake, cannolis, gelato in the summertime, and pignoli cookies that are to die for.

On warm summer days, I sometimes swing by Fortunato's and get gelato to take out. Two big scoops for $1.50 (as of last year) Freshly made, high quality too.

That's surprising. I was always told $1 per scoop, until this past summer when it was $1.50 for one scoop. You got a deal!

A great place which may not have been around when you lived here previously is Savino's Quality Pasta. I LOVE this place and it's wonderful owners. Get high-quality homemade raviolis, gnocchi (truly delicious), cavetelli and other pastas, vodka sauce loaded with pancetta, and Italian dry groceries. Savino's is on Conselyea between Leonard and Manhattan.

The excellent Salvadorean place on Graham between Scholes and Meserole is unfortunately now a Mexican place, although it's a good Mexican place. My heart belongs to Matamoros Puebla Grocery, though.

There are a bunch of new restaurants, bars and coffee shops on Grand between Union and Graham. There's a Mexican place that looks interesting but is pretty expensive. It replaced the last new Salvadoran place the neighborhood tried...now we're back to just Bahia.
