I've recently been to the Chikurin on QB and 64th Ave and everything was very fresh, although the sushi was just decent. The sashimi was very good, nice thick slices of fish.

Well, as I said, I was at the one at QB and 64th Ave recently and could not believe how busy the place was. This was on a Wednesday night and the customers did not stop coming in - both seated and for takeout. They also did an amazing amount of delivered orders. When I see that much traffic in a sushi restaurant, I have to believe that at a minimum the fish is going to be fresh. They also have that 50% off all sush sign at that location.

I live two blocks away from the new Chikurin, and tried it the other day.

The 50% off is only on sushi by the piece. Which makes sushi between $1 and $1.25
All 6 piece rolls are $2.50

However, the sushi is SHAMEFUL

The rice is not properly cooked and totally the wrong texture and density. On the roll (maki) sushi, the rice is layered so thin, about 1 to 2 grains thick, and the fish spills out of the edges.....the presentation is terrible.
You might think that this is ok, as there is alot of fish, however the fish has the consistency of mashed potatoes, it either is very low quality or was frozen too many times and improperly done.

The shoyu is also not very good, too salty and way too overpowering for sushi. It seems that they use very low quality (cheap) soy sauce. But alas, what can you expect from such cheap sushi.

If you are in the area and looking for sushi I have two suggestions:

1. Sushi Oh! - on austin street just two blocks away, more expensive but fresh sushi, nothing spectacular but at least passable.

2. Kuzaku - several blocks up on queens blvd. (across from Chikurin). This is more expensive, but the fish is much better quality, and sometimes they have some rarer types of fish that you dont see at your run of the mill sushi place.

Agreed..the one on 64th Ave is uniformally lousy--tried it many times---Mickey's is very good, although the atmosphere is a bit funky, and I like Sushi oh on austin also...

ugh! well, I appreciate your highly evocative review and will avoid the restaurant like the plague ;-)

I myself am not a big fan of football-sized sushi... I like my fish thinly sliced and on the small and delicate side.

I had some decent sushi at Sato a while ago. The chef gets bigeye tuna in season.

Made a mistake and tried Chikurin on QB and 73rd, and yes, same lousy sushi as the one on 64th ave--and what is with the one glove on and one glove off? They were touching everything with the ungloved hand and then making the sushi with it..I don't get it?!!!

Sushi Oh, is much better----------but, does anyone know why they mysteriously close--like yesterday, and today, they were closed with some weird renovation notice on their door--same thing happened about a month ago--and alas no renovations..what gives?

Ok, forgot my queston about Sushi Oh,,,think I figured it out--checked out the health board site, and they've got 58 score violations from an inspection mid July---perhaps they are fixing the problems--am surprised because it's such a tiny place--and everything is out in the open where you can see things..I've never gotten sick and I get takeout alot from there---------------scrolling through the queens restaurants, I was pleasantly surprised to see many passing with good scores.

i also am not a fan of big, thick slices of sashimi. i'm thinking this became more of a universal way to cut fish so that people might feel like they are getting more for their buck? either way, i also prefer thinner and higher quality cuts that shows some sort of craftmanship.

i digress.

the state of sushi in forest hills/rego park is terrible. i'm admittedly biased and prefer places that are japanese owned/operated (i've had many posts seeking out japanese owned places in queens). there is not a single place in forest hills that is owned by japanese people. well, in queens overall.

so, what do i do? i eat at my bf's parents' house, i'm fortunate that he is japanese.. i find myself shelling out more money to go into the city for japanese. just went to honmura an last weekend... LOVE it there.

i really appreciate Chikurin- it's one of my favorite spots in the neighborhood. Granted it's not the best sushi in the city, I still get rolls to go 2 times a wk and they are consistently good. The fish is always fresh, and I've never had a problem with any thing I've ordered. I love the spicysalmon roll and the tuna avocado roll. For $5 you can't really beat that.

Yes you can go to Tako and Narita, but the rolls are not any better and just cost a lot more.
