An interesting article in the Merc today about a local super premium ice cream manufacturer, Treat. It lists outlets which resell it, including the Peninsula Creamery. Treat private labels for Alameda's Tuckers and others.

Maybe I was having serious senioritis, but I read the article in the Merc and couldn't quite figure out where Treat Ice Cream was actually available, and under what labels. It seemed like it flies way under the radar, and you have to have the inside scoop (pun intended). Did I miss something?

At the bottom of the on-line version it says,

This icecream is really the best for supermarket purchase. The lowfat version is the only one we have tried. My only complaint is the limited number of flavors in the lowfat. I can't believe I ever liked Dreyers ice cream. Sometimes I slip and buy it on sale and invariably throw it away for the lackluster flavors and texture of their lowfat. I emailed Lundardi's customer service yesterday after the article requesting more lowfat flavors! It's on sale this week there at $4.19 for a 1/2 gallon.

Hate to burst the bubble, but if Tucker's uses this ice cream, I can not concider it a premium ice cream. It is not a high butterfat product, and contains a significant amount of air, which, as anyone knows who has worked a pastry department or made ice cream, is not a desired componant.

Nice place to stop for a cone (tucker's), but this is not an ultra-high quality product.

Just one man's (very well informed) opinion:)

I dunno...I'm starting to rebel against the notion that the highest butterfat products are the tastiest. Sometimes I find the butterfat dominates the flavors, especially fruit flavors, to their detriment. A little bit of crystalization, a tad more overrun and less butterfat works better with some flavors and gives them more pop.

I agree -- too much butterfat coats the tongue.

For fruit flavors in particular, just as in wine you need a touch of acid with the sweetness and fat.

Interesting. We talked to the ice cream maker from Tucker's at the Rosenblum openhouse, so we know they make at least some of their ice cream.

I wonder if there's some combination of things going on: does Treat make all the standard flavors? Do they make the machine packed but not the scooped? Do they make all the ice cream the same, or do they custom make it to the retailers' recipes? A combination of the above?
