Hadn't been to Stork's in a few months (major conflict with the Point System...)and stopped in after an informal lunch at the Clintonville on Wednesday
which by the way has a really nice, basic, giant-sized chicken parm/chicken francese lunch special. I was a bit disappointed to see that on the bottom shelf of what had been the outrageous cookie case, they were selling supermarket jars of pickles, beets, and the like. I forgot now if the brands were German (most likely) or Russian, but it seemed odd, a harbinger of something not good for one of my favorite bakeries.

The cookies were of course still delicious, especially those dark chocolate leaves, choco-dipped almond rounds, and raspberry mini-hearts (now 30 dollars a pound because they are so "labor-intensive")The Halloween cookies, particularly the orange glazed Jack-O Lanterns, were also fantastic.

I wonder what's going on with the pickled stuff...

According to my favorite dutchman, Herbie, the owner of the Citgo station on Clintonville @ Willets Point, Stork's is now on the third owner since the Stork family sold. It seems the people that bought Stork's went heavy into the chocolate making business and purchased a huge facility in NJ that was making single serve chocolates for the airline industry.
So, needless to say, you're lucky if the tin can they pack you into even gets off the ground close to an hour or so close to schedule, and you can forget about a nice piece of gourmet chocolate !!!
So, they are gone. The new owners still make an excellent product in most cases. I was there this morning for some cinnamon jelly donuts which are sublime. They seem to have a problem getting everything out on time though. So my advice is call ahead to make sure the pumpkin pies are ready !!
Regards,
JK
