I think you mean "sashimi quality", but anyway- well it's not yellowtail, but I go to Costco and buy the sashimi grade frozen tuna (maguro) filets. They are caught in the wild, fileted on the boat, flash frozen, and vacuum packed. Very well prepared process. A package of 6-8 filets is about $18. You defrost them overnight. At home we make all kinds of great things like sesame-crusted seared tuna, rare in the middle or the popular olive oil and spices sashimi dishes that are popular appetizers around town. They have other fish, but the tuna is the only one that says "sashimi grade" on the package. For the price, it is such a good deal. The sesame-seared dish itself usually cost $18 as an entre- and that's for a single piece! Costco is a bit north of LIC- not far if you are in northern Brooklyn or there's one in the Red Hook area or somewhere there about. You'll need to do the membership thing, but if you like to cook at home, it's a great place for ingredients...Alas, Brooklyn isn't exactly the kind of place for picking up consumable raw fish.

I am only sure about Saturday. They are in the Union Square market on at least one other day. Im no sushi specialist, but they usually have tuna, and may have other fishes such as mackeral (their catch varies). the fish is caught from their own boat, so its about as fresh as it comes - I suggest talking to them.

Although I do like the fish you can get from the people at Grand Army Plaza, I wouldn't get the tuna from them -- the tuna is poorly butchered, leaving the bloodline, and it varies too much in color from pre-cut chunk to pre-cut chunk. Definitely not sashimi-grade. Your best bet is to head into Manhattan.

In the past people have been enthusiastic about Fish Tales on Court St. for some sushi-grade fish and helpful staff. So what's the word these days, yes? no?

The old Quarterdeck in Bay Ridge has reopened with a new name (Chef with Sole or some other corny thing.) They started out rough but are getting better - the other day they had a beautiful-looking piece of tuna for like $18/lb.

Fish Tales sells first rate fresh tuna and also has frozen bricks. I have done raw stuff with the fresh stuff (which may have been frozen previously?--I'm not up on this stuff) and it was excellent. The frozen brick is sold specifically as sashimi grade but I've not tried it. If I correctly recall what I have read, this freezing process destroys parasites.
