Brooklyn birthday cake

I'm looking for an interesting place to buy a birthday cake. I want something pretty much traditionally birthday cake-ish, probably chocolate, from someplace I haven't tried. This rules out Two (or is it Three?) Little Red Hens and Cakeman Raven.

Does anyone have interesting ideas?

Thanks for all the suggestions! I am going to save this thread. I decided to go with Baked, (risking rude treatment). I ordered the cake today--an oreo cake. Baked is clearly a hipster haven, but even so, the people were perfectly friendly and helpful. Since I found myself right next door to Hope & Anchor I sat a spell with my husband and son and had some excellent french fries before going home. I pick up the cake on Friday, so will report back on quality.

How about Downtown Atlantic in Boerum Hill They make exceptional desserts. I particularly love their cupcakes.

We ordered a birthday cake from Downtown Atlantic for our friend's birthday this weekend. It is essentially the same as their chocolate cupcake with vanilla icing (at least the one we ordered). I can report back after the weekend as to how it is. But, I expect great things based on their other desserts.

Cousin John's on 7th Avenue in Park Slope has the most delicious cakes. Their chocolate mousse cake is not a traditional bday cake but it is soooo good.

I second Cousin John's. The chocolate rum cake is unreal.

I am still steamed about the wedding cake Cousin John did for my wedding some 16 years ago. It was delivered late and was not at as fresh as he said it would be. He's one of those guys that promises promises and then screws you over. Yeh, I know Martha Stewart has been using him, but all the more reason he probably doesn't have to come across.

                I hold a long grudge.

I can't recommend enough Your Baker on 86 St (bet 5th Ave and Ft Hamilton Pkway). Excellent baked goods, fresh and tasty. I've never gotten anything there, with the exception of a slice of lemon ice cake, that wasn't good.

sparky's in williamsburg sells these amazing cupcakes although they dont sell them very often. i had their "pastry chef" make a birthday cake for us and it was incredible. and what is also cool about it is that this girl ( i think her name is melissa) will custom make anything you wish! i would call to see if she could make you your cake.

The Margaret Palca bakery in Red Hook (on Columbia St, near Sackett) is excellent. They make the desserts for Alma, which is on the same block.

I got a topnotch carrot cake (but they did all the regular b'day kinds too) in Bay Ridge . . . the name escapes, but it's around 86th St and 4th Ave . . .

Cafe Scaramouche (french/argentinian) down on Court St makes some really delicious birthday cakes. And they make some pretty creative cakes too.
Court Pastry Shop makes some pretty good cakes too, but are more traditional, simple italian cakes.

I second Baked. We tried a slice of the Malted Chocolate cake which was really really good, and their bread pudding and thought it was an interesting twist on an old classic. Even though it's sort of out of the way, I would recommend making the trip. We'll be back this weekend.

Two Little Red Hens (on 8th Ave) in Park Slope makes great birthday cakes. We ordered a chocolate buttercream for our son's birthday and it was fantastic -- dense, very chocolately, yummm. Our cake cost $60 and served about 25.
I've heard Sweet Melissa's on Court Street does nice cakes. Never tried it. Priced it last week. Theirs cost $54 to serve about 20.

Try Lassen & Hennigs on Montague Street in the Heights. They cater most of Brooklyn Heights thru that outlet and their co-owned locations (Monty's, Court Order) Good, basic baked goods, delivered on-time by nice folks.

i second/third baked...we got a 10 inch cake and it more than fed 20 ppl after all the other food we had. plus we had leftovers, which we happily munched on for dessert for a week afterwards...

too bad the people at Baked are so mean and nasty. for this reason alone, I would not give them my business. I don't know what their problem is, but those people have way too much attitude for my taste. sure, the cakes are good (though not spectacular--I could make a cake that's just as good), but why not be nice?

I disagree completely. Have only had above average cake there with the best buttercream I have ever tasted. And the service could not have been better.

I could probably make a cake like that, too, if they gave me the recipe...But that could be said for a lot of things people pay for in this city...Plus I wouldn't want to lug the massive amounts of butter that I am sure it would take to reproduce their product.

I HIGHLY suggest baked--excellent cake and super-friendly people.
