I am taking a friend that has never had dim sum before to flushing. Where would a good place to go for someone new - that might be a little hesitant about trying it. What time is good to go?

To me, "hesitant" and "dim sum" are not very compatible. A great dim sum experience - which in Flushing I guess would be Gum Fong, right? - entails qualities that a hesitant person might not enjoy: large crowds, communal seating, lots of "mystery" food that you can't identify until you take a bite and sometimes not even then, not-so-mysterious food that you wish wasn't quite so easy to identify (eg chicken feet), and an entire ordering and serving process that may well seem cryptic to the unititiated. I love dim sum and love Gum Fong but my husband, a more hesitant eater, hates both.

Maybe try Sweet n' Tart? I haven't been to the one in Flushing but have been to Mott Street, and it is a pretty different experience to Gum Fong - more "western" and a "regular restaurant experience" with a clearly illustrated and priced menu and less communal seating.

But I have to say, Gum Fong is great and a lot of fun, and maybe your friend would love it!

You and your friend should definitely go to Gum Fung. Everything there is great for newbies and veterans alike. The best part is that you can stick to the more common dumplings (har gow, shiu mai, etc.) or venture into the more "exotic" items, seafood dumpling soup, roast pork with crackling, flash-fried shrimp in the shell, fresh home-made hot sweet tofu. That does it I'm blowing off my catering gig Sat. morning and getting my yum cha on!

Eat on,

Another vote for Gum Fong. It's a quintessential dim sum experience. Before you order, feel free to look around and see what others are eating. Even ask other diners what they are eating -- people are usually friendly and open helpful. Finally, go early (11?) for the best selection. Enjoy!

As I Flushingite, I like Gum Fong's dim sum but would cast my vote for Ocean Jewels (on 39th Ave opposite the Flushing Mall, 1 1/2 blocks west of Main St). Yes. go at 11am. By noon there are typically 15-20 min. waits at the dim sum places.

In addition to it having some of the best dim sum in NYC, Gum Fung also has the sweetest serving ladies. They are really nice and helpful, perfect for a newb.
