Lourdes - New Filipino in Woodside
Noticed this place a couple weeks ago and was finally able to try it out Tuesday night.
I was accompanied by two close friends, who first introduced me to Filipino cuisine a couple years ago at Ihawan. The place was virtually empty when we arrived around 8pm. The immediate area is a bit desolate, so it's not surprising that they weren't getting a ton of business on a Tuesday night. The space is a little fancier than the other Woodside Filipino restaurants, with an open area for dancing/karaoke.
The menu was quite long, including an extensive drink menu (the waiter convinced the only filipino among us to try the Chinese Torture (?), whose selling point was that it came with a free glass). We ordered the Beef Kalderetang, Lumpia Sariwa, Laing, and BBQ Chicken. Everything was delicious. And all three of us thought the BBQ was better than Ihawan's, quite an achievement.
I'd certainly recommend it if you're in the neighborhood. It's at the corner of 58th Street and 37th Avenue, in the industrial area of Woodside between Northern Blvd. and the LIRR.
Has anyone else checked it out yet?
how are the prices?

Very reasonable. The entire bill (incl. drinks, tax, & tip) came to about $56 for the three of us. Our entrees ranged from around $7 to $10. Some of the seafood dishes (which we didn't sample) were a little pricier.

So-- we're spellbound. What was the Torture?

Rum, Grenadine, Sprite and something else. My friend enjoyed it. and the free glass.
Didn't get any explanation concerning the origin of the name.

Thanks for the review. I noticed Lourdes a few days ago on my way to Sapori D'Ischia to pick up some groceries. Very elegant on the outside. No menu posted outside so I do appreciate your imput. The area is very industrial and desolate so they're taking quite a risk plus no subways nearby. Looks like there could also be entertainment. Are they open for lunch? If not, I'll go for early dinner.

Didn't notice whether they're open for lunch. It's just a couple blocks away from my gym, so I'll try to find out this week and report back.

Say, thanks for the report. I haven't checked it out yet, but a Fil-Am pal who lives near there says it's quite decent. I'll just quote him; I'm sure he won't mind contributing to the body of hound knowledge:
"I had kare-kare (oxtail in peanut butter sauce) and barbecue. I'd say the kare-kare is better at Ihawan, but it is still pretty good. The kare-kare at Lourdes's has more vegetables and definitely more quantity. ... It was kind of upscale, at least the decor. The waiter said they have dancing there on certain nights starting at 10."

do you have any idea what is the phone number of the restaurant?

It was 718-606-9061, but it's disconnected. I think this place must have closed.
